Project hours are community-based initiatives that the hospital or the Health Scholars initiate to support further and improve the community. Additionally, project hours will help you get an edge when moving into higher-tier departments. With the ongoing development of the program, our Projects branch strives to enhance the Health Scholar experience through other project opportunities.
How to Sign Up
STEP 1: Read the project descriptions below to identify a Project which interests you, and to confirm if you are available; some projects require monthly commitments and weekly consistency.
STEP 2: Email ahglprojects@copehealthscholars.org with your availability, identified Project, and/or questions to schedule your shifts and receive next steps to participate in your Project.
STEP 3: Complete the necessary requirements, if applicable, and attend your schedule shifts!
PROJECT ONE:
Medical Library Support
Health scholars will have the opportunity to support the Medical Lead Librarian at AHGL in managing the medical library. Duties will include moving bond journals and books. Shifts are offered in 2-4 hour time periods from 8am to 3pm only on Thursdays and Fridays. Shifts are limited and available on a first-come, first-serve basis. If you are interested, please contact Samantha Walimaki (PM) and the projects branch to schedule your shift.

PROJECT TWO:
HR Department Support
Health scholars will have the opportunity to support the HR Department at AHGL. Shifts are offered in 2-4 hour time periods from 9am to 12pm and 1pm to 4pm, Mondays through Thursdays. Shifts are limited and available on a first-come, first-serve basis. If you are interested, please contact Samantha Walimaki (PM) and the projects branch to schedule your shift.

PROJECT THREE:
Health Tips Informational
Health scholars will have the opportunity to create a Health Tip, which is an easy-to-read, informational flier that will be posted on our website: Health Tips
Each Health Tip Informational will briefly explain a health topic, provide tips on how to manage/ cope with that challenge, and provide resources about the topic. Topics include physical, mental, social, and other aspects. Completed remotely, online.
Health scholars will have the opportunity to create a Health Tip which is an easy-to-read, informational flier that will be posted on our website
Each Health Tip Informational will briefly explain a health topic, provide tips for how to manage/ cope with that challenge, and resources pertaining to the topic. Topics include aspects of physical, mental, social and more.
Project Hours: Earn project hours while expanding your medical expertise. (1 Project Hours, Maximum of one informational Submitted per month)
Plan of Action: Create information, send the form to the projects branch, receive approval and information posted on the website (Receive an extra project hour if you are able to talk to an Adventist health staff about one of the information posted on the website. Proof will be based on taking a consented photo with Adventist health staff and an image of information that will be emailed to ahglprojects@copehealthscholars.org. Photos will be posted on the website if consent is approved by Adventist health staff.)

PROJECT FOUR:
Occupational Medicine Clinic
The Occupational Medicine Clinic is an outpatient facility for employees, volunteers, and other AHGL associates, which offers radiology, x-rays, EKGs, drug and alcohol testing, physical therapy, and other services. Scholars will check in patients, perform vitals, sanitize exam rooms, and provide support at the clerical or front desk. Located in Glendale, CA, a few miles from AHGL.

Shift Times: each hour will be a project hour (3 hour Shift)
Monday - Thursday

PROJECT FIVE:
Play to Learn Center
The Play to Learn Center is an outpatient pediatric therapy facility providing physical, occupational and speech therapy for children with developmental disabilities. All staff are licensed therapists who would love to partner with the program for Scholars to support in the clinic by observing and assisting with therapy appointments, organizing materials, cleaning up between sessions, calling to confirm appointments while learning more about these medical fields. Located in Eagle Rock, 2 miles from AHGL.
Within the clinic they hold all sorts of therapy including but not limited to feeding therapy and fine motor activities, such as handwriting or playing with toys. The Play to Learn Center is not a medical office and do not treat anyone who is ill/Covid-19 positive. Proper PPE/masking is required in the clinic. The building is across the street from Target in Eagle Rock about a mile from the main hospital.
Shifts are 3 hours long.
Location: Adventist Health Play to Learn Center, address will be provided upon clearance
Clearance required. Must Complete COVID Vaccine Series, Training, Twice a month commitment minimum
PROJECT SIX:
Structural Heart Office
At the Structural Heart Office, Health Scholars will be responsible for assisting with filing and patient communications, specifically conducting follow-up calls 30 days and 1 year after procedures to assess patient progress. They will also have the opportunity to gain insights into this patient population and the procedures themselves (such as TAVR, MitraClip, TriClip, and Watchman) by working closely with staff members and conducting standardized questionnaires with patients to gather valuable data.
Throughout this process, health scholars will have support from experienced team members who can escalate any questions or patient concerns. Additionally, they will help ensure continuity of care by scheduling follow-up appointments with cardiologists for these patients. This position offers Health Scholars a unique chance to better understand structural heart interventions within a supportive, team-oriented environment. Located on-site at AHGL.

Project hours are required for entry into higher tier departments. Refer to the department tier system section for more information on how many floor and project hours are needed to enter into the higher tiers.

Tier 5: 32 Project Hours
Health Scholars are welcome to participate in projects at any time during the rotation. Please reach out to use well in advance so we may coordinate your shifts; please confirm your scheduled shift(s) at least 48 hours in advance so we can inform staff members you will be coming.
