THE SPLENDOR OF BYZANTINE MOSAICS

This three-part lecture series explores the world of Byzantine mosaics, tracing their evolution from Roman floor pavements to the shimmering, gold-leafed domes of Constantinople and Venice.

Part 1: The Early Byzantine Golden Age

Trace the transition from Roman floor pavements to the shimmering wall art of early Christianity – exemplified by the mosaics created during the reign of Justinian, both in Ravenna and in other sites under Byzantine dominion.

Part 2: Venice and Sicily

This lecture explores the transformation of the Byzantine tradition in Italy – ranging from the mosaic decoration in San Marco to the Norman cathedrals in Sicily, focusing on Monreale, Cefalù, and the Palatine Chapel in Palermo.

Part 2: Middle to Late Byzantium

This lecture explores the evolution of mosaics during the middle-Byzantine period (10-12 centuries) Despite the general weakening of the empire during the last two centuries of its existence, the arts continued to flourish - achieving unprecedented emotional depth, dynamic movement, and narrative detail.

Structure: Each lecture is a live event via zoom: a brief check and introduction, to ensure that participants have been able to connect, followed by a slide-presentation of about 50-60 minutes, and a Q&A discussion of about 20-30 minutes. Participants do not have to sign up for a zoom account. The link to the lecture is sent on the day of the event.
