Servant leadership is a philosophy and set of practices in which a leader uses their position of influence to empower others to develop their skills and accountability, improve performance, and make decisions. Servant leadership stands in greatest contrast to the autocratic leadership style (in which a leader clearly defines tasks and monitors and controls their execution), the transactional leadership style (in which a manager evaluates individual and team progress and distributes rewards when goals are met), and the laissez-faire leadership style (in which a leader provides little-to-no feedback on performance or tools to make progress visible).
The servant leadership approach goes beyond employee-related behavior and calls for an organizational culture which supports decentralized decision-making. In agile frameworks, decentralized decision making is paired with tools for objective, visible measures of progress in order to communicate high-level, organizational goals and move them forward.
