"Working software is the primary measure of progress" - Agile Manifesto
Tracking and sharing sound agile metrics can reduce confusion and shine a light on the team's progress (and setbacks) throughout the development cycle.
Progress in agile is measured by comparing how much x was completed over time compared to how much x was expected to be completed in that same time frame. What might be a meaningful x varies depending on one's perspective and position in the value delivery system.
Stories are tracked in terms of story points.
Tasks are tracked in terms of (1) estimated remaining hours; (2) remaining task count; (3) or not at all.
