AFS was founded in 1943 by volunteer american ambulance rescuers from 1st and 2nd world wars. They were part of the division called: "American Field Service"; hence the name: AFS. The Danish part of the organisation was founded in back in 1958.
The philosophy behind AFS has always been, that if we are to achieve more peace in this world, we are to learn, understand and respect each others more despite cultural differencies. This has envolved into cultural exchange of students across borders all over the world. AFS is now represented in more than 50 countries, and by that the worlds, as well as Denmark's largest and oldest organisation of exchange of young students.
In AFS Aalborg it is our job to find and approve host families for the exchange students coming to our part of Denmark. We are also to approve applicants who wish to go abroad as exchange students.
Other tasks is to organise events for the exchange students and their host families. We must stay in contact with the exchange students to ensure their well-being. We do this by enlisting volunteers contact persons who monthly reaches out to the exchange students, but also supports the host families. Finally we are to keep our organisation known in our area.
