....Ms. Afrika Abney was a very dedicated tutor to the fourth grade student with whom she was paired. She was always prompt, and in fact frequently came early in order to prepare for the lesson Ms. Abney was going to teach that day. She was very committed to building a relationship with her student and brought in materials that appealed directly to the student's interests and worked to connect her lessons with these interests. Ms. Abney was passionate about children's literacy and that passion was very evident in her work...."- Emily Gaynor

" Afrika Abney is diligent, committed, and positive person." - Angela Jasper
"I believe you subbed for me only once a couple of years ago during 2016 - 2017 for my ATL class. I was impressed with your diligent response and following up as soon as possible with how my class went. This was much appreciated. Most of my students usually don't remember the subs name who cover my classes, but they all remembered yours (and referred to you as "Mama Afrika" in an endearing way I believe)." - Aaron Stone, Reading Teacher at DCI with a Masters in Special Education
"From October 2012 -May 2013, Afrika Abney worked for Young Playwrights' Theatre (YPT) as an after-school visual arts teaching artist from at Harriet Tubman Elementary School. During this time, she has proven herself to be a loyal employee and a gifted teaching artist. Her presence in the classroom is strong, and her genuine caring for her students is obvious. She shows a clear understanding of the importance of arts education. She is also timely, hardworking and professional." - Laurie Ascoli
"Afrika Abney was employed by Young Playwrights' Theater (YPT) from October 2012 - May 2013, when I was YPT's Artistic Director. Ms. Abney was placed at Harriet Tubman Elementary School, teaching visual arts to very young students. This was a pilot program, and Ms. Abney proved her skills especially in working with this age group. She was always professional and completed the residency to our satisfaction. "- Nicole Jost
"Afrika is dedicated to teaching art and dance to youth. She is very professional and super willing to go the extra mile to seek clarity and communicate effectively with other teachers." - Sylvana Juliet Christopher, Afrobeats Dance Instructor with Joy of Motion Dance Center

Greetings,
I have known Ms. Afrika Abney for several years. I first met her at Malcolm X Park where she conducted the drum and dance circle from 2009 - 2015. I hired Ms. Abney to serve as my West African Dance instructor for my Summer Camp that took place at M.O.M.I.E.S TLC during the Summer of 2015. She demonstrated a high level of punctuality and dedication towards teaching a small group of children West African dance. Ms. Abney interacted and engaged each of the children.
She is a Native of D.C., high school and college graduate, and single mom. Ms. Abney is also an amazing person, trained art and dance professional. Her passion for authentic African - American culture is unbelievable. Ms. Abney uses her formal training in the arts to conduct workshops, career day presentations, and offer instruction to children and youth in the community, as well as provide consulting services.
I highly recommend Ms. Abney.
Should you have any questions, please contact me.
Thank you very much for your time and I hope to hear from you soon.

Greetings,
I first met Ms. Afrika Abney when I hired her as a staff member at my old campus at Bruce Monroe Elementary School for my Summer Program from 2003 - 2004; and in 2013 at my old campus at Center City Capitol Hill Middle School for my Summer Program. She taught a group of middle school and lower school students in visual art. She created and implemented a visual arts lesson plan for the summer program, specific to lower grade students of varying backgrounds and abilities. Students gained knowledge and dexterity in specific forms of visual arts, including illustration.
Ms. Abney is a trained art professional. She has a special interest in painting, collage and mask design, and photography. Ms. Abney is capable of teaching various subjects such as abstract, oil, and watercolor painting, collage design and charcoal sketching.
Should you have any questions or wish to speak with me directly.
I highly recommend Ms. Abney as a teaching artist, art professional, art instructor, community advocate and leader.
Thank you for your time and consideration in advance. I hope to hear from you.
