Dear Friends,
On December 6th last AEFJN Ireland held it's most recent webinar "Who Pays for Christmas?" and we promised at the time to come back to you with the recording and the resources used at this event. We have also added in other resources that have been sent in to us. We ask that you might share this event widely with all as this could indeed be your Christmas gift to others.
Many thanks for all your support in our event.

AEFJN Ireland:
The Africa Europe Faith and Justice Network (AEFJN) is a faith-based international network of religious and missionaries who work to change European policies and corporate practices that negatively impact on the most marginalised in sub-Saharan Africa. The Secretariat for the network in headquartered in Brussels. Across Europe and Africa there are several antennae, or branches, that constitute the network. Each antenna researches, lobbies and advocates around a small number of issues that are deemed to be of greatest immediate concern in their respective country and in support of the strategic focus of the Secretariat. The Irish branch in its current form, was established in 2021 and builds on the collaboration of 9 religious congregations in Ireland. A key focus of the work to date has been to support the campaign work of the Irish Coalition for Business and Human Rights (ICBHR) – of which AEFJN Ireland are members - in advocating for a UN binding Treaty and EU regulation of corporate value chains. As part of this work we highlight corporate irresponsibility and human rights abuses that affect individuals and communities living and working in Africa, and how this impacts on the environment. Implicit in this is our collective responsibility to reveal, address, and remedy ongoing abuses.
Some of our key events have included networking with other antennae in Europe and Africa; hosting a series of webinars with key speakers on issues of corporate accountability, human rights abuses, extractive industries in Ireland and Africa; women’s human rights; the SDGs; making submissions to the Universal Periodic Review and supporting ICBHR. Tonight, the focus of our message is ethical consumerism. While Christmas is indeed the ‘most wonderful time of the year’ as Andy Williams reminds us, it is a heightened time where we should practice mindful consumerism for people and planet. To help us to do this, we have 3 brilliant speakers who will highlight the impact of unethical consumerism and guide us through ways in which we must consider and take action as regards our individual and collective responsibilities.
Our First speaker was Aidan Ring from Fair Trade Ireland and we return to Aidan later in the webinar where he shares a video that brings to life how we can translate the theory of Fairtrade into practice in our communities.
Our second speaker is Dr. Ciara Murphy from the Jesuit Centre for Faith and Justice and Ciara explains the detail of Laudate Deum to us all attending.
Laudate Deum can be found and downloaded HERE
This Laudate Deuim resource was sent to us by the SMA Justice Desk and can be printed HERE
Our Third Speaker is Sr. Annatolia Muzatta PBVM who lives and works in Zimbabwe and her presentation was read for us by Sr. Mary DeLargy of AEFJN-Ireland.
A PDF of Sr. Annatollia's Slides. The link to her slideshow presentation can be found HERE
We then returned to Aidan to show the video that brings to life the issue of Fairtrade in new spaces while also introducing us to the concept of Fairtrade Ambassadors.
We then heard from Mr. Jim Owens who brought us up to speed on the issues that pertain to the Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive (CSDDD). This continues to the focus of much of our work and energy.
Abigail Watson was then charged with telling us a little more about the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive.
And finally we hear from Lara Kelly from Dominican Justice and she circled back to ethical consumerism reminding us of what we can do to behave responsibly and ethically this Christmas and we also share Lara's slides below.
And we also offer a PDF of Lara Kelly Slides with the link to these HERE
And finally we offer another resource prepared for us by the Presentation Sisters.
