Dear Friends,
We were overwhelmed by the enthusiasm and engagement with our recent webinar, Hope Not Fear. At this webinar we promised to send you a recording of the very informative, moving and thought provoking inputs from all of our speakers, to whom we are deeply indebted. Below is a set of 5 videos, each representing a separate presentation, links to their slides, a number of recently published articles and an introduction to the new book and film AreWeHuman.
We are asking you to share this newsletter with others and this is your 'call to action' to mark this years International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination as is observed annually on March 21st.
Many thanks for your ongoing and continued support.
All on the AEFJN Ireland Team.
(If you thought that you would like your congregation to be a part of AEFJN Ireland then we would love to hear from you on aefjnireland@gmail.com )
Sr. Brigid Corrigan opened our evening with her reflection. You can watch the video of her input and the introduction of Sr. Mary Delargy. The link to Brigids slides can be read HERE or seen below.
Lara Kelly of the Dominican Justice Office and a member of AEFJN Ireland explored the issue of why people move opening with the short film below from Trinity College Dublin. The recording of Lara's input can also be seen below.
Berta Quiñonero of INAR (the Irish Network Against Racism), then introduced the issues that relate to racism in Ireland and she gave us an overview of who and what INAR are and does and the hope that it inspires from within it's membership. She offered the notion of the iceberg as a descriptor of racism in Ireland given that what we see as racist is only the tip of what actually manifests and constitutes as racism. Berta has offered too, that should anyone like to make contact that she would delighted to assist in answering any queries. Berta Quiñonero comms@enarireland.org
Dr. Naomi Masheti attended our webinar along with Sr. Jo McCarthy from the Cork Migrant Centre and as Berta referenced the prevalence of institutional racism Naomi was able to give practical examples of how young people recognised and called for change. Naomi alerted us to a number of hopeful anti-racism initiatives that are youth-led. You can see Naomi's presentation below and indeed her slides can be read HERE (and below). You can find out a little more if you visit the Cork Migrant Website.
The final contributor to the evening was Br. Kevin Mascarenhas, a Presentation Brother who works with the Schools of Sanctuary and he told us that becoming a School of Sanctuary is really a 'Journey' as opposed to being a 'Project'. Being a school of sanctuary is a whole school experience and currently there are upwards of 200 schools that have achieved this status. You can find out more at the Schools of Sanctuary website but before you do you can see Kevin's presentation below and we include also his slides HERE and below). Also included in this final section of the webinar is the Q & A and our thanks to all who attended.
