Two documents from Fr. Chika, AEFJN Secretariat in Brussels:
i) Statement of the Global Campaign on the Third Revised Draft of the Binding Treaty on Transnational Corporations and Human Rights
ii) Third draft of Legally Binding Instrument to Regulate in International Human Rights Law, The Activities of Transnational Corporations and Other Business Enterprises
From Fr. Chika....
Following my participation in your antenna meeting and the request of the group for information to enable them participate in our campaigns, I am glad to send to you the third draft of the UN Binding Treaty and the statement of our platform on the draft. The UN Binding Treaty is one of our major campaigns and the antenna can do two things to build synergy with us on this front:
On a more practical level, the antenna can do a research to find out whether Irish companies or their subsidiaries are involved in mining or agro business operations in Africa. We will collaborate with you to research on the status of their operations with respect to Human Rights and environmental standards. This basic information is key to any collaborative advocacy on Business and Human Rights in Ireland.
Contact the Irish representatives to the UN and the EU and find out from them where Ireland and the EU stand with respect to the Binding Treaty respectively. These will enable us to define the next steps in our engagements with them.
Building synergy with you on this front will certainly leapfrog this campaign. Fr. C.
