Death and dying is definitely a very sensitive topic for every individual regardless of their job and status. I feel like death is something very private and sensitive especially for healthcare workers since they deal with it a lot, especially in surgeries and OR. First of all I will respect patient's values above all emotions and feeling of my own, it is essential we as healthcare workers respect the values of our patients and care for them accordingly. It is crucially important to build an individual strong emotional response to these tragedies to eliminate possible harm towards myself and others around me. I feel like it is necessary for me to learn how to cope with grief because by setting my emotional foundation, I can be helpful and professional even while experiencing tragedies of patients, although I could never be cold hearted. I hope to set an emotional barrier between work and personal life to differentiate them and learn to support and be kind to those who lost their loved ones, while also realizing that this is something that could not be eliminated from the risk chart, therefore shouldn't be my personal tragedy and apathy. I hope to set my healthy emotional foundation to be professional and caring. One stress response I plan to use when coping with death is practicing deep breathing and meditation. I feel like acknowledging negative emotions and thinking about the next steps needed for the safety for everyone in a professional setting is more important than just expressing emotions in tears and mental crash down. Working in healthcare is realizing potential risks like death and being ready for them mentally. Of course, I believe that there are days that are more difficult than others, there are times when tears are a way to get rid of the pain, but I do not think that a professional setting like an OR is a place for that. If I ever feel like it is too much or I need mental help, I will not hesitate to reach out to a professional. I plan to recover by meditation after dealing with death at work. Meditation and breathing after a busy day have helped me throughout my entire life to relax my mindset and calm down my nervous system and I think it will help here as well.
