Tempus Cucumis’ sixth album was originally intended to be a commentary on today’s society. More specifically the ridiculous amount of conspiracy theories taken seriously by far too many, ill-informed, alternative-facts-believing people. Irony, humour, and sarcasm were to be the driving force of this album. The unprovoked war caused by Russia in Ukraine caused us to deviate and broaden our commentary. Anger seeped in. When, in the final stages of completing the music, a dear friend came to pass, we abandoned the all-encompassing social commentary and focused several songs on the deeply private. Sorrow and loss also wanted their pound of flesh.
In many ways, this album represents the turbulent times we’re today living in. Not a day seems to pass without its new share of horrors and end-of-the-world announcements. Luckily, hope still lingers and not all is lost, there is still—granted, quickly fading—time to turn things around. No matter how dark it sometimes seems, to paraphrase Mr Cohen, there are still cracks through which the light can get in.
