I couldn't find a lightweight linen in the shade of off-white I wanted, so I experimented with dying white linen swatches until I achieved a result I was pleased with.
The winning recipe was a strong hot bath of instant coffee for a few hours, then a vinegar soak.
Pattern was drafted and altered based on Simplicity 4177. Adjustments include adding fullness to the body, raised neckline, lowered hem, and custom-designed sleeves.
Machine-embroidered neck front. Pattern is three separate rows of embroidery stitched next to each other. Note the (mostly) symmetrical nature of the embroidery - this was not by accident and was very time-consuming!
It required perfectly even feeding through the sewing machine, with very careful planning to ensure the waves lined up with each other.
The middle line is a directional design (it points upwards on both sides), so after stitching to the center point, I had to stitch a separate symmetrical center design, then program in a mirror image of the first design and continue the stitch.
Custom-made bias tape elastic casing around the neck. Made from the same fabric.
Neck ties and sleeve cords also made from the same fabric.
Pin-tucks added to upper sleeves for interest, and to ensure fullness at the top of the sleeve instead of underneath once the cords are tied.
Body side seams are left open a few inches from the bottom to allow easier freedom of movement. Raw edges are finished.
Sleeve and body hems are blind-stitched, to reduce the appearance of machine top-stitching.
Wooden beads threaded onto end of neck ties.
