Always write answers in UPPERCASE
If the answer is a proper noun, the first letter must be capital, like ‘Garren Smith.’ But someone may write ‘garren smith.’ So, ½ mark may be cut.
In most answers with common nouns, lowercase is appropriate, like ‘the blue chair’, and writing ‘The Blue Chair’ might be incorrect.
To avoid such ambiguity, students are advised to write all 40 answers in UPPERCASE, so as to avoid any issues with sentence case.
Carefully read the word limit for gap-fills
The word limit can be:
ONE WORD ONLY
ONE WORD AND/OR A NUMBER
TWO WORDS AND/OR A NUMBER
THREE WORDS AND/OR A NUMBER
For example, for TWO WORDS AND/OR A NUMBER, the answer can be:
5 PINK KITES
KITES
5
PINK KITES
5 KITES
Circle the question that you’re doubtful about, so as to not make errors in the sequence while transferring
Read the questions during the reading time and guess the type of answer that could come.
Underline the keywords that seem most unique.
Using black ball pen is compulsory for writing answers; no pencils allowed.
If the correct answer is GREEN PARROTS, then these are wrong:
GREEN PARROT (singular)
THE GREEN PARROTS (extra word)
GREEN PAROTS (spelling error)
GREEN-PARROTS (extra hyphen)
PARROTS (missing word)

Read the transcript along with the audio; don’t solve the questions
Reverse Engineering: Write down the answers and then listen to identify patterns and reasoning
Targeted Practise: Practise only those parts that you have issues in, like Part 3 MCQs or Matching Qs
Part 3 Discussion MCQs
Mark the keywords in all questions
See if the question specifies whether one or both of the students must agree or disagree with the view
See if there’s a special element mentioned like surprise, certainty, excitement, etc., and look for its synonyms
Cross off those options for which you’re sure are not the answers, so as to eliminate the incorrect options
Part 2/3 Matching Questions
Do not directly write the answers with the flow of the recording
Make notes right beside the words, selecting the main phrases that the speaker says
When the recording finishes, mark the answers that most closely relate to those words
Getting Lost in Part 4
The notes are clearly organised using title, headings, subheadings and bullet points
Always mark the most unique keywords during reading time
Until the words from the relevant section are spoken, the answer hasn’t come
Remember that sometimes two consecutive answers may have a long description in between, so wait until the answer comes
If still you believe you have missed out, focus on the next subheading, so as to not not miss out on the whole recording
