Overview
We are seeking a skilled and detail-oriented Court Reporter with expertise in real-time reporting and prior appellate experience to join our team. This role is critical to ensure accurate and timely documentation of court proceedings and proper handling of court exhibits. The ideal candidate will possess exceptional transcription skills, professionalism, and a commitment to the integrity of the judicial process.
Key Responsibilities
· Accurately record and transcribe court proceedings, including trials and hearings, using real-time reporting technology for the 235th District Court.
· Prepare verbatim transcripts efficiently and in compliance with applicable standards.
· File exhibits with the District Clerk’s Office ensuring proper documentation and organization.
· Maintain confidentiality and uphold ethical standards in all reporting activities.
· Operate and maintain advanced court reporting equipment, including stenography or digital recording tools. Provide your own equipment.
· Work collaboratively with judges, attorneys, and court personnel to ensure seamless court operations.
· Responsible for reading portions of transcripts aloud when requested.
· Maintain monthly statistics for Court of Appeals report.
· Perform related duties as required.
Qualifications
· Certification as a Certified Shorthand Reporter (CSR) in the state of Texas.
· Real-Time reporting proficiency is required.
· Prior appellate court experience is mandatory.
· Strong knowledge of legal terminology and court procedures.
· Excellent typing speed, accuracy, and attention to detail.
· Proficiency in court reporting equipment and real-time software.
· Strong organizational, communication, and time management skills.
Compensation and Benefits
· Salary: $118,449.76 annually.
· Longevity Pay: $240/year after the first year of employment.

Duties and Responsibilities:
Under general supervision, the Court Reporter performs a variety of court reporting duties for the assigned court. The duties involve furnishing a statement of facts of court proceedings to requesting parties and compiling court records by taking a verbatim record of court proceedings in phonetic shorthand using a stenotype machine, maintaining the records for future use. Provides equipment used in performing duties, including stenographic machine, computers and printers, along with necessary reference material.
Attends all court sessions and makes full record of evidence, objections, rulings, voir dire and arguments when requested by Judge or any party to a case, together with all objections to admissibility of evidence, rulings and remarks of Court.
Makes full record of jury arguments and voir dire examinations when requested by attorney for any party to a case, together with all objections to such arguments, rulings and remarks of Court.
Documents and files all exhibits with various Clerk of Courts; preserves all notes for future reference and for the required length of time and prepares accurate transcript, as instructed, of court proceedings for appeals or future court use.
Prepares official transcripts of all evidence or other proceedings, or any portion thereof, subject to laws of the State, the rules and instructions of presiding Judge of the Court.
May conduct deposition of witnesses, receive, execute and return commissions, and make a certificate of proceedings in any county that is included in the judicial district of the court; may prepare jury charges in civil cases; may perform administrative or secretarial services which assist in administrative functions of the Court.
Regular attendance.
Employee may be assigned other duties in addition to those listed and duties may change according to changing needs of department.
Minimum Qualifications:
This includes a minimum of 10 hours of continuing educations (including a minimum of 2 ½ hours in Ethics/Rules) every 2 years as required to maintain license.Requirements for certification are that reporters pass an oral exam that consists of dictation and that they pass a written exam at 75 percent accuracy.
Must have proof of a current valid Texas motor vehicle operator’s license.
Must be able to be insured by County insurance carrier.

Key responsibilities include:

Prepares official transcripts of all evidence or court proceedings, subject to laws of the State, the rules and instructions of presiding judge of the court, for appeals or future court use. Certifies the accuracy of court transcripts. Responds to requests of official transcripts.
May serve as a liaison to attorneys, judges, other County departments and staff, officials and general public. Provides information relating to court hearings and charges.
May conduct depositions of witnesses. May receive, execute and return commissions. May make a certificate of proceedings in any County that is included in the judicial district of the court. May prepare jury charges in civil cases.
May perform administrative support duties as assigned for administrative functions of the court.
Performs other job-related duties as assigned.
Qualifications and Requirements:
Must pass two (2) proficiency tests consisting of 180 wpm literary, 200 wpm jury charge, and 225 wpm Q & A, depending on nature of dictation used, to become eligible for certification. Certification exam consists of two (2) sections, Part A and Part B. Part A requires a minimum passing grade of at least ninety-five (95%) percent accuracy on the certification exam and Part B requires a minimum passing grade of seventy-five (75%) percent.
Machine shorthand theory and minimum standards established for certification as a Certified Court Reporter.
Texas law and court procedures, terminology, record keeping practices and procedures, and Court decorum.
Federal, State, Local and County laws, rules, regulations and guidelines relating to court reporting services.
Computer applications and hardware related to performance of the essential functions.
May be required to develop knowledge of and adhere to federal and state laws requiring the confidential handling of certain health information.
