ACA TVC board meeting
Our TVC board of directors have had many meetings so far! We have been planning many exciting events and coordinating a work plan for the coming year. We have also decided director roles playing to each other’s strengths. Our Director of Connections, Caitlin Li, has made an impressive banner for the TVC to use at any of our events or activities to promote our name.
AAPI Heritage Month Festival
TVC members staged booths of Rice Dumpling (Zongzi) DIY, Chinese tea culture exhibition and tasting, Chinese Calligraphy, Chinese naming service, Chopsticks games, Piano Performance, MC. In addition, TVC invited a Lion Dance, Chinese Yo-Yo, Taichi, and Tang Dynasty dance performances. One Book, One World 2022 MI AAPI Book Drive
On Tuesday May 24, Comerica, GM, ACA and Pontiac School District volunteers were gathering at Alcott Elementary of Pontiac. Goodie bags and books were delivered to the students. Volunteers went to classrooms to read to the students. As representative of ACA TVC, Ingrid Huang participated in this event.
Asian Restaurant Coupon Book
TVC directors each contacted at least 4 local Asian restaurants to persuade them to attend ACA Asian Restaurant Coupon book in May. Unfortunately, most of the restaurants are having very busy business and showed little interest in it. Nonetheless, TVC directors learned a lot from this experience and will use these skills further on.

ACA TVC board mTVC Extraordinary Leadership Award
TVC Extraordinary Leadership Award is aimed to recognize outstanding TVC leadership from the President, Vice-President, Directors, and Outstanding Team Lead. On behalf of the TVC Board and the TVC Parent Advisory Board, we are happy to announce the 2022 recipients Dillan Lau and Shanshan Ye. Dillan and Shanshan are long term ACA Youth Volunteers. They took the initiative to co-found the TVC and build this wonderful platform for teens to contribute to the Asian community, practice leadership, and make new friends working as one team. Congratulations and good luck in college, Dillan and Shanshan!
Farewell Message from Dillan Lau
Dear friends and families of the TVC,
My first interaction with the Association of Chinese Americans occurred during my freshman year. Continuing off of the project that my good friend Hans Liu started, I volunteer to help organize the thousands of English and Chinese books in the Chinese Community Center’s library, a lengthy endeavor that I never envisioned to reach full completion. Yet, four years later, we have finally finished consolidating the library’s collection into a catalog on our website for quick and easy access. Of course, I could have never completed this gargantuan task by myself. As we recruited more and more people, I co-founded the Teen Volunteer Council with Shanshan, which is one of my proudest accomplishments that I look upon very fondly. Working together over holidays, breaks, and summers, made this project possible. Now, the ACA Library can provide the resources and books necessary to support the educational, cultural, and informational needs of the Chinese community.
The scope of the Teen Volunteer Council has expanded far beyond its original project. Now composed of over thirty student volunteers across the Metro Detroit area, the TVC supports ACA’s mission in creating and executing projects. I’m eternally grateful to our contacts in the ACA: Shenlin Chen, Charles Liu, Peggy Du and the ACA board directors. Their continual support of the TVC has allowed us to assist in many of their programs, such as the Annual Gala, Healthy Gardening Fair, Virtual Reading Programs, and so much more. Through these activities, I have been able to give back to the community, which has been incredibly fulfilling. Talking with current students about critical real-world issues and engaging in my culture with others has taught me a lot about the world and myself.
As I approach the end of my senior year to move onto college, my time at the ACA also draws to a close. I would like to thank the Parent Advisory Board for their insight and supervision, especially my mother Nancy Guo for her devotion to the TVC since Day 1. Most importantly, thanks to the TVC students for adding color into my high school experience. Working alongside you all has given me treasured memories that I will never forget. As the next generation takes the reins of the TVC, I emphasize cooperation and collaboration: after all, making a meaningful difference requires the combined efforts of passionate individuals willing to help each other and their community. Together, we can accomplish anything.
Take care,
Dillan
Farewell Message from Shanshan Ye
To my fellow members of the TVC and the ACA community,
It is with a bittersweet heart that I now say goodbye. The goal of the TVC has always been to create a space for students to express with gratitude towards their community, and as I graduate from high school, it is my turn to depart and make way for new, passionate students. When creating this little group, I did not expect we would turn into a community of leaders, humanitarians, and most of all, friends. Together, we have achieved and inspired more than I ever dreamed of, and I would like to thank each and every one of us for helping the TVC become what it is today. I am so proud of what we have accomplished together, and I am so glad to see the impact spread to the hearts of other young students. Yet, I cannot help but feel a little sad. Even though I am leaving the TVC in strong and capable hands, I am overwhelmed with emotion. No longer will I be a member of the TVC. No longer will I be able to bond with you all while serving others. No longer will I have the opportunity to meet and connect with such a unique group of people while working towards a common goal. I will miss creating the best memories while completing the most tedious tasks. I will miss laughing and crying all at once with someone 5 years younger than me. I will miss being a part of the TVC. Now that I look back and reflect on the experiences in the TVC, I am regretful that I did not do more. The TVC really was a once in a lifetime opportunity, so I encourage you all to take your life into your own hands and do more. But as my duty comes to an end, I must be selfless and make way for others to grasp onto this wonderful experience. I cannot wait to see what other once in a lifetime opportunities my future holds for me, and where my lessons I’ve learned through the TVC will take me.
Until next time,
Shanshan
TVC 2022-2023 School Year Co-Presidents
We have chosen the TVC Co-Presidents for the 2022-2023 School Year. They are Ingrid Huang (Troy High School, 11) and Nicole Zhong (Greenhills, 10). They have exhibited outstanding community service, leadership, and creative talents to the TVC and the ACA. We know that they will lead the TVC team into our next chapter. Their presidential responsibilities will take full effect beginning May 1st, 2022.
New TVC Board Director Introduction
In April, two TVC director positions were available for current 9th and 10th graders to apply. We received applications from Caitlyn Li (Cranbrook, 10) and Yi-An Liao (Cranbrook, 9). We have carefully considered their applications to the TVC Board. Their passion, interests, and ideas toward contributions to the ACA and TVC have impressed us all.
As they stated in their applications:
Yi-An: I hope that TVC will be able to become a place of comfort and learning, where American Chinese youths can be proud of their heritage, but also teach others about their heritage as well.”.
Caitlyn: I would love to join the TVC Board of Directors because it would provide me with the chance to serve the community in a more meaningful and prominent way.
We are happy to announce that Caitlyn Li and Yi-An Liao have been selected as new TVC Board Directors. We look forward to working with them, and hope that they can bring their values and plans to make the TVC even better. Each of their parents is invited to join the TVC Parent Advisory Board. Current parent advisors consist of the parents to the student directors.

2022 One Book One World Fundraising
The ACA (Association of Chinese Americans) is currently fundraising for 2022 One Book One World MI, which will be using the fund to buy local schools AAPI (Asian American and Pacific Islander) Heritage books to promote our history, culture, and contributions to society.
Being part of ACA, our TVC wants to have a fundraising goal amongst our members. $350 can buy one set of books so it would be great if we can target our total to cover 1 set at a minimum, but can shoot for two. With us having 30+ members, the suggested donation amount is $12 – $30+.
Your donation will help us accomplish these goals. To donate, you can Venmo @Alex-Ye-9 OR Zelle/QuickPay to: shiqianli@hotmail.com
Please ensure to note “1B1W + [your name]” in the memo.
The donation receipt will be provided for tax purposes.
The donation deadline is 5/15.
The selected book catalog is attached here. Feel free to distribute it to further promote the AAPI heritage outside of this fundraising activity. ACA’s activity details (English and Chinese) are also attached for your reference.
Thank you for being part of the TVC and ACA,

TVC Introduction at ACA February Board Meeting
On February 24th, Dillan and Shanshan were invited to give an introduction to the TVC at the ACA monthly board meeting. They shared the TVC’s history, version, objectives, and operations.
TVC’s current membership includes 12 boys and 18 girls. 16 are high school students, and 14 are middle school students.
TVC has three objectives. First, we fully support ACA’s mission. Our activities include participating as discussion leaders in the Youth Reading Program, participating in the last two Healthy Gardening Fairs, supporting the 49th Annual Gala by performing the American National Anthem, and helping out at the recent “Feed the Homeless Event”. We will continue to provide our services whenever we are needed.
The second is volunteer recruitment. We realized that recruiting TVC members is a great way to get family members as well. In the past, our TVC parents have been workshop speakers, book donation helpers, and much more.
The third is library services. Over three thousand unorganized books have finally been cataloged after all these years. We continue to collect new book donations and maintain the library’s collection for all patrons in the local community to enjoy. Most importantly, the library website, which is home to the online catalog, is maintained by our TVC members. In the future, we have plans to develop our own workshops, reading programs, and so on.
The TVC presentation went well. It helped ACA board members learn more about TVC. They all appreciate the students’ and parents’ hard work and contributions to the ACA. The ACA will continue to support the TVC and hope that more young students and their families will become ACA volunteers.
Library Support Team Update
