About the ACA
The Association of Chinese Americans, Inc. (ACA) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization established in 1972. It is the founding chapter of the Organization of Chinese Americans (OCA), which currently has over 50 chapters and affiliates across the United States. ACA is dedicated to advancing the social, educational, political, and economic well-being of Asian Pacific Americans in the United States. Through its three service centers that operate in Wayne and Oakland counties, ACA plays a leading role in enriching the lives of Asian Pacific Americans in the Metro-Detroit region. In its 53 years of existence, ACA has strived to promote the general welfare of Chinese Americans and the Asian Pacific American community by supporting youth education, enhancing the lives of older adults and adults with disabilities, and reducing health disparities. Through its daily services, the organization directly reaches more than 10,000 people per year. We are dedicated to improving the lives of Asian Americans of all ages and backgrounds.
TVC's Mission
The mission of the ACA Teen Volunteer Council (TVC) is to empowering youth through community service by focusing on supporting disadvantaged communities, promoting Asian American heritage, leadership development, and community engagement & collaboration. We aim to inspire positive change, foster inclusivity, and develop young leaders who are passionate about creating a more connected and compassionate world. The TVC is an opportunity for students to develop valuable leadership skills while contributing to the Asian American Community. Student members range from grades 6-12.
A member must possess good communication and interpersonal skills, as well as the ability to maintain and foster cooperative and courteous working relationships. TVC members are active, creative, passionate advocates of the ACA.
TVC's History
In 2019, several high school students founded the Teen Volunteer Committee, which was the first student-led youth volunteer group for ACA. In October 2021, we gained official recognition from the ACA Board as the Teen Volunteer Council, a change from our former Teen Volunteer Committee. This change results from ACA’s structure going forward. We will continue to coordinate closely with the ACA and its many events in the future. Currently, we have 110+ student volunteers, and we hope more will join. We really appreciate the support from all our members and their families. From August 10th to August 24th, TVC volunteers came together for a CCC Outdoor Cleanup, dedicating their time to improving the local environment. Volunteers worked together as a team, picking up litter, organizing recyclables, and helping to refresh community spaces to make them cleaner and more welcoming. The effort not only beautified the area but also encouraged environmental responsibility and teamwork.
On September 1st, upcoming and current High School students took part in the Research in the Humanities Workshop, where they learned how to begin the research process, analyze sources, and share their ideas with confidence. The session broke down research into simple, practical steps and showed how studying history, literature, arts and culture connects to real-world understanding. By the end, students felt more prepared to take on projects and gained useful skills they can carry into future research projects and beyond.

From August 21st to August 22nd, students participated in the Stand Out Workshop to improve in both giving and receiving interviews. Through interactive activities and personalized feedback from Ms. Namita Prasad, an experienced public-speaking teacher, attendees gained tools to highlight their strengths and make lasting impressions. At the end of the workshop, students participated in 1-on-1 interviews, building confidence and skills for success. The workshop created a supportive environment where students could practice, learn, and leave feeling prepared to shine in future opportunities.
July 26th, TVC volunteers joined the Chinatown Block Party to support a vibrant day of community celebration. Volunteers helped set up activities as well as the ACA stand, assisted local vendors, and guided families through games, performances, and cultural showcases. TVC volunteers not only ensured the event ran smoothly but also highlighted students' commitment to community service and cultural awareness. The block party brought together neighbors, food, music, and tradition.
