2024 Thanksgiving Volunteers Appreciation and President Volunteer Service Award (PVSA) Ceremony
Thanks to all the volunteers who have made great contributions to the TVC this year. You have received recognition for the time and effort that you put into bettering our community and increasing our outreach. It is you who has made what we do at the TVC and ACA possible. As our community grows, we will be able to accomplish more and increase our presence and impact on those around us. We hope that you will continue to support us and our goals in the coming year. This year TVC received six Gold, three Silver and six Bronze PVSA awards. 2024 ACA High School and College Students Achievements Scholarship Award Ceremony
Thank you to everyone who attended the scholarship award ceremony. Congratulations to TVC’s Co-President Hana Yang and Vice President of Communication Yi-An Liao for winning the scholarships! We are proud of everyone who applied for the scholarship and the 22 amazing high schoolers and college students who received the ACA High School and College Students Achievements Scholarship. We would also like to thank the First Lady of the University of Michigan, Wendy Yip, for being our keynote speaker as we aim to support people in our talented community in their endeavors. 2024 ACA Annual Gala
The 2024 ACA Annual Gala was held on October 20th. Many important people such as ACA leaders were present to speak about the achievements of the ACA in the past year. Leaders and representatives of our communities were also present, in person and in spirit to support the ACA and its goal for the coming year. This has been a wonderful year for both the TVC and ACA. As we look forward to the coming year, we see new opportunities to take and more support to give not only to the ACA but also to other organizations and their goals. 9/28 FAR Event
We were happy to continue to partner with FAR to increase our reach to different parts of the community. This time we prepared supplies for art therapy for kids with learning disabilities. We hope that in the future we will be able to continue to partner with organizations like FAR to further support organizations with different missions and goals. 9/21 Healthy Gardening Fair
The annual Healthy Gardening Fair was a lively event featuring performances, food, and activities promoting healthy eating within the community. We were able to sell produce from our own CCC at the fair, which was made possible by the volunteers over the summer who helped with watering and weeding. Here is a video of the event.
9/15 Detroit Diesel Family Day
On September 15th. 2024, TVC attended the Detroit Diesel Family Day and set up tables featuring Chinese calligraphy, lantern painting, paper cutting, face painting, and a TVC ACA information booth. Enjoy a video of the event.
NAFFAA Conference
The NAFFAA Conference had many attendees from across the Midwest with experts discussing various topics concerning our communities from how to run a non-profit to the importance of discussing history and facilitating meaningful conversation and cooperation between different communities. Many of our TVC directors attended various segments of the conference and learned a lot from the different speakers and their presentations. Photos from the conference can be viewed here.
8/3 and 8/4 Leadership Workshop - Speak Up!
On August 3rd and 4th, the ACA TVC hosted its first-ever Leadership Workshop - Speak up! taught by experienced confidence educator and ConfidentLee Founder Namita Prasad. Students built their confidence, wrote compelling speeches, learned about effective speech delivery, and showcased their knowledge in a final presentation on the 4th. The workshop received much positive feedback and the TVC hopes to hold more workshops in the future.
8/3 Tennis Clinic
On August 3rd, the ACA TVC had a one-day tennis clinic for eager K-8th grade students to develop their tennis skills. The clinic was held at the Northville High School Tennis Courts and taught by TVC Directors and members who are also tennis players. Students participated in a fun-filled day with drills, games, and other tennis activities.
ACA Youth Summer Camp
The ACA Youth Summer Camp has been running smoothly for three weeks now. We’re in our fourth and last week of camp ending on August 2nd. The camp has been great, with kids learning how to play Chinese Yo-yo, and ping pong, write calligraphy, and cook with the help of counselors who support and teach these kids. TVC’s library team has been reading books to camp kids every week.
7/11-7/14 OCA National Convention
Representing Detroit, the ACA attended the OCA National Convention in Philadelphia this year from July 11th-14th. TVC’s co-president, Anna Wang, attended the event with some other ACA leaders. The event featured leaders and members that empower the AANHPI community all over the country. The convention also hosted a presidential town hall which featured Vice President Kamala Harris. Thanks to everyone's help this year, ACA also won a 2nd place award in the Membership category!
6/8 Fundraising at The American Chinese School of Greater Detroit
TVC had a food booth at the food festival hosted by the American Chinese School of Greater Detroit at Derby Middle School on June 8th. TVC sold plenty of delicious foods for fundraising such as cold noodles, rice noodles, congee, bubble tea, braised beef, and many other foods. TVC raised over one thousand dollars and beat our record by about 200 dollars from last year. Watch the video of this event made by Lauren Ye here.
6/1 Annual Vincent Chin Commemorative Event
This event featured the unofficial Asian American Photographer Laureate Corky Lee’s photo exhibition at the Chinese Community Center (CCC). At the event, Curtis Chin, the special guest speaker who has written a book and filmed a documentary about Corky Lee and his contributions to the Chinese American community, spoke about the importance of people like Corky and his mission with his documentaries. 5/25 Madison Heights Memorial Day Parade
Many TVC members and seniors arrived in Madison Heights on May 25th to represent ACA and the Chinese community. People marched together in the parade and had a lot of fun with drumming and other activities. After the parade, TVC members also watched the Madison Heights Memorial Day Ceremony. 5/24 Pontiac Public Library API Month Celebration
On May 24th, the ACA attended the Pontiac Public Library API Month Celebration, hosting several booths with calligraphy and chopstick games. Other local API organizations also attended, providing snacks, tea tasting, and cultural games. The event also featured a buffet style dinner and many cultural performances. 5/19 TVC Orientation Day 2024
This year at orientation, we invited new members to TVC and awarded current active members with awards for their hard work over the past year. We gave gifts and said goodbye to our former Co-Presidents Caityn Li, Nicole Zhong and former Vice President Alex Ye as thanks for their leadership in the past. We wish them all the best in their college life. Our new TVC co-presidents, vice-presidents and directors introduced themselves to the team to grow TVC and ACA in the coming year. 5/11 RHGYC Cultural Fair
On May 11th, the Rochester HIlls Government Youth Council hosted its annual cultural fair. There was food, performances, and plenty of fun cultural booths. The TVC hosted a booth with chopstick games, calligraphy, lantern making, and more.
3/9 - 3/12 JACL/OCA Leadership Summit
From March 9th to March 12th, TVC Vice President Alex Ye traveled to Washington D.C. to represent OCA Detroit at a joint leadership summit in conjunction with JACL (Japanese Americans Citizens League). At the summit, he listened to many distinguished speaker panels, ranging from civil rights advocates to Capitol Hill staffers. He received advocacy, leadership, and media training to prepare for his visit to the Hill on the last day. During his visit to Capitol Hill, he and a small team of participants met with two House Representatives and lobbied for their cosponsorship on two bills, the Reuniting Families Act and the All Students Count Act.
3/2 ACA Lunar New Year Fair
On March 2nd, ACA hosted their Lunar New Year Fair, which was a huge success. The TVC held a fundraising booth which sold many authentic Chinese food/baked goods. Lots of volunteers were needed for this big event, and helped with selling food, running games, face painting, promoting TVC, and more. Members also assisted in the setup and cleanup of the event. 2/24 ACA Lunar New Year Banquet
The community gathered to celebrate Lunar New Year on February 24th at Royal Palace Restaurant in Troy. Many TVC members attended, and helped out by selling raffle tickets and setting up. Please click here for the video.
2/18 Cranbrook Chinese New Year Concert and Celebration
On February 18th, ACA partnered with Cranbrook Orchestra to celebrate the new year. There was a Chinese New Year Concert and Celebration at Cranbrook Kingswood Upper School. TVC members performed, face painted, served tea/food, and more. Photos can be found here.
2/17 Lunar New Year Celebration at DPL
On February 17th, TVC members helped out at the Lunar New Year Celebration at the Campbell Branch of the Detroit Public Library hosted by ACA. Volunteers helped with running games, checking people in, lantern painting, and more. Anna Wang and Clare Wong also performed piano and dance pieces. Thank you to all volunteers!
