Collective intelligence is how multiple people work together to form an intelligent outcome or answer to a job or question. The group comes up with a collective answer. Generally, collective intelligence is used as a way to discard discrepancies in ideas and to reach an accurate consensus. Collective intelligence comes about through crowd sourcing. When a job or problem is given to the crowd, multiple answers will be obtained due to the large amount of people who make up the crowd. By putting these ideas together, ideas which do not fit the job can be discarded, as previously stated. The collective effect of the numerous ideas will be more accurate than the idea of one person [Cross, 2013].
An example of collective intelligence is the work done by NASA. The organization set up a Clickworkers project which allowed regular people to attempt to map the surface of Mars. The project consisted of people identifying craters and other landmarks on the planet. The work done by NASA demonstrates collective intelligence as the identifications performed by the amateurs almost completely matched those performed by professionals. This shows that the collective intelligence of many untrained people is equal to the intelligence of a few trained professionals [Collective Intelligence, 2018] .

However, a difference between crowd sourcing and collective intelligence comes where in collective intelligence the people of the crowd must be chosen or monitored. The crowd must have knowledge about the problem, the ability to take a step away from current ideas, and diversity in ideals/views. This is how collective intelligence leads to an accurate outcome [IBM, 2012].
