Greetings! Start Here: Course Introduction
Thank you for taking the time to learn about the United Nations (UN) 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) agenda. This is an introductory course introducing learners to the United Nations (UN) 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and identifying its applicability in a real-life framework. There is so much more to learn about the various endeavors of the United Nations (UN) 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including how to find out information about where various countries are in meeting their 169 targets and indicators (Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN), 2021a; SDSN, 2021b; SDSN, 2021c).
The predecessor to the United Nations 17 Sustainable Development Goals was the United Nations (UN) 8 Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) (United Nations, 2015a; United Nations, 2015b). The MDGs differed from the SDGs on the number of goals, targets, indicators, general focus, target, and formulation (United Nations, n.d.). As global citizens we can all make an impact, no matter how small, in support of the sustainable development goals.
Chowdhury's (2018) video, titled, "M1.6: MDGs and SDGs," gives a brief overview about the MDGs and the SDGs, and I encourage you to watch this informative presentation.
Van Der Hijden's (2020) interactive map provides a way to quickly view the United Nations 17 Sustainable Goals with the associated 169 targets, located to the left side of each SDG. The UN 17 SDGS are also listed between pages 14-27 of the UN 17 SDG Agenda, and each target is listed below the Goals numbered as 1.1., 1.2., etc. (United Nations, 2015a).
This course will be presented entirely online in an asynchronous manner to allow you the ability to complete this course that is most convenient for you. All modules will provide you with the needed resources to complete the Learning activities.
