Introduction to Module 1: Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) & Individual
Module 1 serves as an introduction to the term sustainability, efforts that can promote sustainable development, the United Nations 17 Sustainable Development Goals and how we as individuals can make a difference. In Module 1, learners will complete a checklist then answer and submit a short answer test about their three contributions to sustainability. Sustainability is a term with far reaching consequences. Sustainability entails three pillars to include social, economic, and environmental dimensions (United Nations, 2015, p. 3).
One of the most common definitions of sustainable development was published in 1987, in the "Report of the World Commission on Environment and Development: Our Common Future," also known as the Brundtland Report. At that time, Physician Gro Harlem Brundtland's report defined, “Sustainable development is development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs” (World Commission on Environment and Development, 1987, p. 41). As professionals we have an obligation on many levels to not only learn about sustainability, but to promote sustainable development. Our planet has limited resources and as individuals we can make contributions that have an impact not only on our generation but on future generations.
