Colorado Safe Routes to School (SRTS) uses a comprehensive approach to make school routes safe for children when walking and bicycling to school.
CDOT (Colorado Dept of Transportation) administers Colorado's SRTS program.
In Colorado, many communities, parents and schools are fostering a safe environment for their students by using SRTS programs to not only fund education and safe infrastructure, but also to encourage healthy options for our children that are safe for both walking and bicycling.
District 38 is hoping to have the new Safe Routes to School Trail open in time for this fall 2025 event!
A walking school bus is a group of children walking to school with one or more adults. That may sound simple, and that is part of the appeal. It can be as informal as two families taking turns walking their children to school or as structured as a planned route with meeting points, a timetable and a schedule of trained volunteers./.
A variation on the walking school bus is a bicycle train where a group of children and adult leaders ride together to school.
Saguache County near Crestone, CO
Crestone is participating in the Colorado Safe Routes to School (SRTS) program, which aims to make school routes safer for children walking and biking. A new trail, formally known as the Saguache County-Crestone Safe Routes to School Trail, is being constructed to connect the Baca Grande area to the Crestone Charter School. This project includes infrastructure improvements like a multi-use pathway, curbs, gutters, and landscaping.
The project is a collaborative effort between Saguache County, the Town of Crestone, the Crestone Charter School, the Baca Grande POA, and the Eastern San Luis Valley Trails Coalition with the support of San Luis Valley Great Outdoors
Fort Collins, Colorado
The Fort Collins city Safe Routes to School program works with strategic partners such as Poudre School District and Bike Fort Collins to increase the number of students safely walking, bicycling, skateboarding, scootering, and taking the bus to school. Whether through bicycle and pedestrian safety classes, improved sidewalks and bike lanes, or enforcing school-zone speed limits and other "traffic calming" in school areas, our community is working together to make active transportation a great choice for kids!
