Everyone has opinions about what is right and wrong, but how do we know what is right and wrong? Is it a feeling? A vote? A rule book? Sometimes it seems like what is right and wrong changes depending on what the world says, but we can actually determine what is right and wrong and who decides what should be right and wrong. To do this, we hae to go all the way back to Genesis.
In Genesis 1, we see that God is the creator of all things. God created everything and said that it was good. The goodness in creation helps us see that everything good flows from God and His character.
Right and wrong aren't random. They reflect who God is. God doesn't just know and declare what is right and good, God is what is right and good.
But, God's creation didn't stay perfect when Adam and Eve chose to sin - to disobey God. Instead of trusting God, they decided for themselves what was right and wrong. And this didn't just happen to Adam and Eve, this happens to us too. We sin. It's not just that we don't know what's right, it's that we don't always trust God. We have a sin problem.
The good news is that God sent Jesus to rescue us from our sins. Matthew 5:17 says:
"I have not come to abolish the Law, but to fulfill it."
Jesus didn't come to erase God's rules or say those laws didn't matter. He completed them. Jesus lived the only perfect life, living out all the commandments, living up to the perfect standard of God. We we put our faith in Jesus, the Holy Spirit will help us know what's right.
Do you believe that what God says in the Bible helps us understand what is right and wrong? Why is this challenging sometimes?
Are there things in your life, maybe rules of things in society that make you wonder if it's right or wrong according to God and what the Bible says?
Pray and ask God to help you follow Him.
