Note : this is the list of the material I personally used to produce the square below. It is not compulsory to use the same hook size or the same yarn.

Small Star

equivalent to two granny rows

Start with a magic ring*

ch 3 (equiv. dc), dc 2, [ch 2, dc 3] x4, hdc in the last stitch of the starting chain
[ch 4 (equiv. tr), dc, hdc] on the previous hdc, [skip 3 and in the next stitch [hdc, dc, tr, ch 2, tr, dc, hdc]] x4. Finally, on the starting hdc [hdc, dc, tr], ch 2

Fast off.

Large Star

equivalent to three granny rows

Start with a magic ring*

ch 3 (equiv. dc), dc 2, [ch 2, dc 3] x4, hdc in the last stitch of the starting chain
[ch 3 (equiv. dc), dc 2] on the previous hdc, [skip 3 and in the next stitch [dc 3, ch 2, dc 3]] x4. Finally, on the starting hdc [hdc, dc, tr], ch 2
[ch 4 (equiv. tr), dc 2] on the previous hdc, hdc, sc, [skip 2 and in the next stitch: sc, hdc, [dc 2, tr in one], ch 2, [tr, dc 2 in one], hdc, sc] x4, skip 2 and in the next stitch: sc, hdc, [dc 2, tr on the starting hdc], ch 2.

Star in a square

4x4 Granny Square

The first two rows correspond to the small star above. After these first two rows, especially in the case of a colour change, one can resume the star from any point of the star.

Attach to a point, [ch, between the 2 hdc from the previous row [tr, dc 3, tr], slst, ch on the two chains from previous row] x5
slst to start in the middle of the chain, [ch 3 (equiv. dc), dc 2], then follow the diagram from the bottom right corner.

Approximative size: 10 cm

Variant : After the third row, the global shape is round with 35 stitches. The next row could be crocheted as a round, for instance for a coaster.
