5 After I go through Macedonia, I will come to you—for I will be going through Macedonia. 6 Perhaps I will stay with you for a while, or even spend the winter, so that you can help me on my journey, wherever I go. 7 For I do not want to see you now and make only a passing visit; I hope to spend some time with you, if the Lord permits. 8 But I will stay on at Ephesus until Pentecost, 9 because a great door for effective work has opened to me, and there are many who oppose me.
10 When Timothy comes, see to it that he has nothing to fear while he is with you, for he is carrying on the work of the Lord, just as I am. 11 No one, then, should treat him with contempt. Send him on his way in peace so that he may return to me. I am expecting him along with the brothers.
12 Now about our brother Apollos: I strongly urged him to go to you with the brothers. He was quite unwilling to go now, but he will go when he has the opportunity.
13 Be on your guard; stand firm in the faith; be courageous; be strong. 14 Do everything in love.
15 You know that the household of Stephanas were the first converts in Achaia, and they have devoted themselves to the service of the Lord’s people. I urge you, brothers and sisters, 16 to submit to such people and to everyone who joins in the work and labors at it. 17 I was glad when Stephanas, Fortunatus and Achaicus arrived, because they have supplied what was lacking from you. 18 For they refreshed my spirit and yours also. Such men deserve recognition.
Paul's letter to the Corinthians, particularly 1 Corinthians 16, he reveals a dynamic picture of how the early Christian movement was playing out...While facing opposition and numerous challenges, Paul emphasizes the importance of courage, unity, and faithful service within the church...Paul personally faced beatings: He mentions being beaten with rods multiple times (2 Corinthians 11:25)...He faced stonings: He recounts being stoned once (Acts 14:19)...He was in different shipwrecks: He experienced numerous shipwrecks, enduring hardship and danger at sea (2 Corinthians 11:25)...He faced imprisonment: He spent time in prison, facing various forms of imprisonment and confinement (Acts 16:23-27; 2 Corinthians 11:23)...He often went without food or water, so he endured periods of hunger and thirst, facing deprivation and hardship during his travels...Paul's ministry was particularly challenging due to the unique circumstances he faced...He was a prominent figure in the early church, actively spreading the Gospel throughout the Roman Empire...This naturally brought him into conflict with Jewish religious authorities and Roman officials, leading to significant persecution...
It reminds me of the author S. Baring-Gould who wrote Onward, Christian soldiers with verses like: Marching as to war, with the cross of Jesus going on before!...Christ, the royal Master, leads against the foe; forward into battle, see His banner go!...And so Paul Soldiered on despite all of his great challenges...
St. Paul tells the Corinthians about his own itinerant ministry, highlighting the importance of supporting those who labor in the gospel...He acknowledges the challenges he faced and we see above of some of the great challenges he had been through...He mentioned that still "many who oppose me" (v. 9), yet he remains steadfast in his mission...This demonstrates his remarkable strength of character and a deep reliance on God's Grace...
Paul then turns his attention to Timothy, a fellow minister, urging the Corinthians to treat him with respect and support...He emphasizes the importance of unity with the followers of Jesus, encouraging them to work together and support those who are serving the LORD...This highlights the significance of teamwork and mutual encouragement in the Christian life...
Furthermore, Paul commends the household of Stephanas, recognizing their dedication to serving the LORD's people...He urges the Corinthian believers to "submit to such people", emphasizing the importance of recognizing and valuing those who faithfully serve the LORD...
Finally, Paul exhorts the Corinthians to "be strong," to "stand firm in the faith," and to "do everything in love."..These words are a powerful reminder that the Christian life requires courage, perseverance, and a deep commitment to love...
In essence, 1 Corinthians 16 provides a glimpse into the realities of what many of the early followers of Jesus were going through...It highlights the challenges, the importance of unity and support, and the need for courage and perseverance...Paul's words serve as a reminder that the Christian life is not always easy...Paul faced much opposition in his own ministry and spreading the word of Jesus...Believers may face opposition, needing to overcome obstacles, and persevering in the face of the challenges like St. Paul had...However, through unity, support, and a steadfast reliance on God's Grace, believers can overcome these obstacles and effectively fulfill their mission, just as Paul did...Paul’s message serves as a powerful reminder that the Christian life is not always easy, but it is ultimately a life of purpose, joy, and service to God and others...Paul is urging the Corinthians and us to draw on our strength from our relationship with God, to remain steadfast in our faith, and to live a life that reflects the character of Christ...
