Even with G1MRA's Trade Show cancelled and its AGM held on Zoom, there are still things to report.
- the Bulldog book
- a significant Scratchbuilding archive
- my Finescale Survey results
- G1MRA Spring Meeting 2021
SCRATCHBUILDING BOOK:
See: https://www.g1mra.com/books-binders/ which reads thus:
"Scratchbuilding: GWR Bulldog 3343 CAMELOT, by Tony White
"In this new G1MRA book, Tony White explains the way he translates his research on full-size build variations into a finely detailed scratch-built 1/32 scale electric model of a GWR ‘Bulldog’ 4-4-0 named Camelot. He decided that Gauge 1 lent itself to finescale models that could run alone without the need to build matching finescale countryside, and combined all that he had learned about model engineering and making detailed fittings. His young grandson used to watch as he started building the ‘Bulldog’, and Tony realised that when he inherited it, he would never remember how they made it if it went wrong. So, he made copious notes, took many photographs and wrote a leaflet on taking it apart. This developed into a new 92-page G1MRA book. G1MRA Vice-President Martin Hulse and Committee member David Halfpenny have worked with Tony in editing and producing the book.
"If you are inspired by this book to try Gauge 1 scratchbuilding, you will find a wide group of G1MRA friends and suppliers to help you solve any problems that arise.
"Copies of the book are now available from Mike Bland at the G1MRA Bookshop for members in the UK £15, members outside the UK £16, non-members in the UK £18, non-members outside the UK £19. All prices include post and packing. Remember if you decide to pay by PayPal please add £2 to cover their charges."

Although this book might appear well outside G1MRA’s usual comfort zone (highly-detailed / steam-outline / Finescale wheels) nobody’s batted an eyelid. After all, Tony’s methods apply equally well to a 10mm live-steamer on Standard wheels.
The book is spiral-bound for workshop mis-use: at this price, why not buy a second copy to keep clean?
SCRATCHBUILDING ARCHIVE:
Group Member Dave Bowden has gone to the trouble of sharing roughly 80 scratchbuilding articles (so far), on his simple, stylish Blog:
https://djb-model-rly-articles.blogspot.com/
I really appreciate how much work this has entailed, and how valuable it will be to scratchbuilders.
Dave has also been scrupulous in researching Copyright. As Major J. L. Sparks died in 1949, his work can now be republished. R.E. Tustin’s daughter, Mrs S. J. Adshead, wrote in 2020, "I therefore have no objections to the scanning of drawings published in magazines being made available to others via an online archive.” John Lewis has given his express permission in person.
As Dave is still researching the remaining authors, keep those articles to yourselves. Dave states his willingness to take down any material at an genuine owner's request.
(While on the subject of scratchbuilding, we do our best to foster it in the G1MRA Newsletter & Journal, forming an ongoing online archive available to Members.)
FINESCALE SURVEY:
Here are my questions to you all in Newsletter 8, April 2020:
Challenge 1) Please let me know if you are involved with, or interested in, a Scenic Model Railway Exhibition Layout.
Challenge 2) Please let me know if you are involved with, or interested in, a 2-rail DCC Scenic Model Railway.
Challenge 3) Please let me know if you are involved with, or interested in, any kind of layout (indoors or out) that can take G1MRA-Fine, ScaleOne32, or Dead Scale wheelsets.
And here is my question to the whole of G1MRA in NL&J 266:
There’s a great deal of highly detailed 1:32 traction and rolling stock, yet relatively few places to run them through a scale landscape. Whether or not you belong to this group, we’re really interested to know who is either involved in, or would like access to scenic model railways in 1:32 Scale. Please respond to David Halfpenny at 1.32.finescale@gmail.com or 0781 327 5621 and mention which of these excite you: Live Steam; 2-rail; DCC; Finer-than-Usual track and wheel standards; Exhibitions; Get- Togethers.
Well, I’ve had no replies from anyone on any of these.
Naturally there'll be folk trying to suppress a smirk and avoid saying, “I could have told you so.”
I’d be most interested in all your comments.
Especially if you do have a Scenic, DCC or Finescale layout after all ;-)
I’m not asking ‘for a friend’: I’m asking for me.
I’m moving house, and have a new layout to plan.
SPRING MEETING 2021:
The house move caught me on the back foot regarding the G1MRA AGM. I'd built a Virtual AGM website but, when September came, I was juggling too many simultaneous property deals to keep the AGM plate spinning as well. Sorry.
Thanks to those of you who took the trouble to keep us legal, by casting votes and/or attending the Zoom meeting.
For Spring 2021, G1MRA is keeping its physical Exhibition options open right to the wire.
All the same, just in case, I’ve roughed out a Virtual Spring Meeting 2021 site.
Either way, please prepare either to bring models, as you did in past years, or to share crisp photos as you did so spectacularly in 2020.
Stay Safe!
David Halfpenny
