The story of healthy eating cannot begin without the local market. This week, we had several different activities, one of which was teaching students how to choose healthy fruits and vegetables at the local market. We took them there, introduced them to local producers, and showed them the seasonal fruits and vegetables. The goal of this activity was to equip them with the skills to make healthy choices for their school meals. The purchased fruits and vegetables were then used to make fruit salads together. The children enjoyed it, practiced fine motor skills, and worked as a team. They will adopt these new habits at home as well. Bon appétit!
Watch the video that the students prepared on their own to show their classmates what they have learned. The video is also available on the school's website and on our school's YouTube channel.

HEALTHY EATING WEEK
A week dedicated to healthy eating, with daily activities ranging from lectures to hands-on workshops.
MONDAY
Introducing key information with the different food groups, exploring how much of each should be in a person's daily diet.
Children could take it in turns to read the information in the help box and then think of examples of food to go into each group.
Game: "Food Pyramid": Create a food pyramid and have children place images of food in the correct places.
TUESDAY
This day focuses on building healthy habits with nutrition.
Healthy Cooking Workshop: You can make a yummy fruit bowl or healthy meal with your kids, or even shop local and explore what farm-to-table means.
WEDNESDAY
Plan for success by creating a menu for each day of the week, with plenty of fibre and a different protein each time.
Can children include non-meat proteins in their meals as a further challenge?
THURSDAY
Equity awareness and promoting healthy habits
Encourage kids to try new healthy foods by offering a variety of options during meals and snacks.
Make sure to include foods from different cultures to celebrate diversity.
FRIDAY
Game: "Guess the Ingredient": Present different packaged foods and have children guess the ingredients from clues.
Involving families in a healthy week event can help strengthen the partnership between the school and the community and reinforce healthy habits at home.
Encourage families to share their own healthy habits and traditions with the school community.
This can help celebrate diversity and encourage families to support each other in living healthy lifestyles. Provide resources for families to continue promoting healthy habits at home, such as healthy recipe books, exercise routines, or information on local health resources.
Creative Activity: Create a mural with drawings and messages about healthy eating that children can take home.
My students prepared a healthy saorma from the left over food in the fridge. They used whole grain flatbreads, grilled chicken breast, lettuce, tomatoes, cucumbers, and Greek yogurt.
They got a very tasty and healthy dish.
