How does a 'monitoring for growth' disposition inform our practice?

Aims

• To consider effective monitoring for growth for all learners
• To reflect on the key factors that support growth and high expectations for all learners

Intended Outcomes

By the end of this module, participants will have:

• Identified some of the key steps involved when monitoring for student growth
• Developed an awareness of various progressions of learning and how these relate to monitoring for growth for all students
• Reflected on the importance of a growth mindset to inform teacher practice and the class environment.

Learning Experience 1: Mapping Activity

Individual Task: Brainstorm some of the key factors we need to consider in order to support every learner’s growth? Record your brainstorming using the online tool 'Sketchboard.me'

Learning Experience 3: Building on the Mapping Activity

Individual Task: Revisit your brainstorming from Learning Experience 1. Add to or modify your brainstorming in light of the Horizons of Hope-Focused on Growth extract. Add to your map in a different colour in order to track evidence of a shift in your thinking (Growth)

Learning Experience 4: Monitoring the Progression of Learning

Task:

1. Looking at the Victorian Curriculum F-10 consider a key content area or capability, (eg ‘Ethical Capability) then select the scope and sequence for this area. (Eg http://victoriancurriculum.vcaa.vic.edu.au/ethical-capability/introduction/scope-and-sequence)
2. Now identify a strand and level (eg Ethical Capability- Decision Making and Actions strand, level F-2 ) while viewing the scope and sequence document
3. Then look at the next level for this strand (eg Ethical Capability- Decision Making and Actions strand, level 3-4 ) and reflect on how growth might be monitored over time. For example, What might learning growth look like for this content area? Can this growth be described as increasing levels of competence along a continuum of learning? Discuss with your team and then... Action: come to a team understanding of monitoring for growth.

Team Reflection : How do we inform and shape teaching practice when monitoring for growth? Share your team's thinking on the Project Google + community and respond to another team using the ladder of feedback.
