Reeds

The main sound of a clarinet or saxophone is produced by the reed. So it's really important to buy good quality reeds, and take good care of them. We recommend Rico Royal (Clarinet  Alto Sax). Younger players should be using strength 2.5, and older players should use strength 3 (once you start learning high notes you should be playing a strength 3).

It is also helpful to have several reeds available and keep them in a good reed case.

Small reed holder - $6

Large reed case - $24

Mouthpiece

In addition to the reed, the most important part of your child's instrument is the mouthpiece. Upgrading to a better mouthpiece will instantly make them sound better, and make the clarinet easier to play. Student model instruments usually come with poor quality mouthpieces, so when a student upgrades they often get really excited and practice more!

Here is a decent quality mouthpiece that is moderately priced and will make your child LOVE playing clarinet or saxophone.

Clarinet - Fobes Debut Mouthpiece - $30

Alto Sax - Hite Premiere Mouthpiece - $27

Clarinet Neck Strap

This is a game changer for many young clarinetists. One of the big challenges for them as they learn low notes and high notes is covering all the holes correctly. Having a neck strap makes it easier and more comfortable to hold the clarinet, which allows for better hand position and greater facility. This can help your child overcome the challenges for young clarinet players, and also avoid some bad habits.

Here is a great quality clarinet neck strap - $21-28
