Vocal Strand Auditions
All vocal music applicants will perform one (1) prepared selection of appropriate genre, 2-3 minutes.
There will be an accompanist available for your audition or you may bring your own.
Memorization of the music will not be required, though it is recommended. Students should understand that attire, posture, facial expression, and professionalism in performance are all components of the overall audition score
Applicants must furnish sheet music for the adjudicators that will be uploaded for use during the audition process.
IMPORTANT: Xeroxed copies of copyrighted music are in violation of federal copyright law and will not be accepted for audition use. If you are performing music from a book you own, please hold up the book before beginning your audition. If you need to purchase digital music, listed below are online sites where sheet music may be legally purchased, downloaded, and printed for a small fee:
The repertoire should be set at a medium level of difficulty or higher and your audition will consist of the following components.
One (1) prepared selection of appropriate genre, the piece should be 2-3 minutes and of at least medium difficulty (Art Song (standard recital literature), Opera, Folk, Gospel/Spiritual, Vocal Jazz, or standard Broadway/movie )
Sight-reading exercise
Vocal scales to determine voice range
Interview Questions (questions relating to their voice part, vocal development, art form and their interests in the Vocal Strand
