Students will audition live in front of a panel of adjudicators to be critiqued on various techniques and skills respective to their instrument and genre. Eligible primary instruments of study into the VPAA Instrumental Strand are core school; band (flute/piccolo, oboe/English horn, clarinet/bass clarinet, bassoon, saxophone, trumpet, French horn, trombone, euphonium/baritone, tuba), strings (violin, viola, cello, bass and harp), and percussion (snare drum, mallets and timpani) instruments. We also offer rhythm section instruments (electric guitar, electric bass, drum set, piano in the jazz style, classical piano and classical guitar) as a secondary instrument of study; however, students must successfully pass a primary audition on a band/orchestra or percussion section instrument.

Classical Piano - Secondary instrument only, must pass audition on primary band, string, or rhythm instrument.
Students will be asked to play two major scales (memorized, two octaves, hands together, parallel motion), a chromatic scale (C to C, two octaves, hands together, parallel motion), a harmonic progression (I-IV-I-V7-I) in C, F, and G, and a sight-reading. Prepared solos must be a classical selection from the ABRSM, RCM, or Trinity College exam lists, minimum Grade 4 (see above for links to lists). Prepared solos for classical piano must come from the Associated Board of Royal Schools of Music (ABRSM), Royal Conservatory of Music (RCM), or Trinity College exam lists, minimum of Grade 4. It is encouraged students work with a private music teacher to explore these pieces, which can be found in their syllabi on their websites.

Classical Guitar - Secondary instrument only, must pass audition on primary band, string, or rhythm instrument.
Students will be asked to play two major scales (memorized) using the full range of the instrument, starting on the 6th (lowest) string. In addition, students will be asked to play various chord shapes including 1st position “CAGED” shapes, and Barre chords on the E and A strings. Students will be asked to read a sight-reading which incorporates written
notation and lead-sheet style examples. A prepared solo must be a classical selection from the ABRSM, RCM, or Trinity College exam lists, minimum Grade 4 (see above for links to lists). A nylon stringed classical guitar is preferred; however, a steel stringed acoustic guitar is acceptable.
Rhythm Section- Secondary instrument only, must pass audition on primary band, string, or rhythm instrument.
Rhythm section instruments will be asked to comp and improvise over two choruses of a Blues (F) and Rhythm Changes (Bb). Bassists will walk and improvise over the same. Drum Set will be asked to play time and improvise over the same with brushes (Blues) and sticks (Rhythm Changes). A guitar amp, bass amp, and drum set will be provided.
