When campus fully reopens, the Office of Sustainability's Greener Office Program will help your office or department reduce its environmental impact. Just because your department's a little more distant than usual, though, doesn't mean you can't make your home office a bit more sustainable. We've listed below a selection of actions from the forthcoming Greener Office Program that are just as relevant to your home office.
Once you've seen the list and identified ways you can make your home office more sustainable, please fill out this Google form to let us know what you've already been doing and you're going to start. Ten participants will be selected at random to win gifts from the Office of Sustainability.
In addition to individual awards, the Office of Sustainability will also be recognizing up to four departments/units for their commitment to sustainability from afar. The top departments by total participants and total actions undertaken (raw score and weighted by unit size) will be recognized by the Office of Sustainability when campus reopens.
Put up signage near lights in your area reminding people (yourself included) to turn the lights off when not in use.
Make sure your electronics are turned off or in sleep mode when not in use. Consider using a power strip to shut down non-essential electronics.
Refrain from using space heaters when bundling up is an option.
Pull down shades/blinds in rooms during cooling periods, and raise them during heating periods.
Keep lights off when natural light is sufficient to light your work space.
Identify an office supply you use frequently and find a more ecologically friendly version of the item for the next time you buy it (e.g. pens made from recycled materials).
Stop using single-use plastic coffee pods (e.g. k-cups)
Learn the proper recycling practices for your jurisdiction, and start following them. (Dutchess County's regulations can be found here)
Increase the number of vegetarian meals you eat (e.g. observe Meatless Mondays or go Weekday Veg). If you're already a vegetarian, you can still claim this credit.
Tell us about something that's not on this list that you're doing to be more sustainable.
