Keeping Windows up to date is important for security, performance, and reliability. Updates often include critical security fixes, bug resolutions, and system improvements that help your device run smoothly.
To help maintain reliable internet access for classrooms during the instructional day, Windows Updates are managed on a schedule across the district.
Keeping Windows up to date helps:
Protect your device from security threats
Improve system stability and performance
Ensure compatibility with district software
Reduce unexpected errors or crashes
Outdated systems can sometimes cause issues with:
Printing
Wi-Fi connections
Software compatibility
Login and performance problems
To prevent district internet slowdowns during school hours:
Windows Updates are blocked during the school day
Updates become available after 3:30 PM each weekday
Updates are also available on weekends
This helps ensure instructional tools and online resources remain responsive while students and staff are actively using the network.
The best time to install Windows Updates is after school, once the district network opens at 3:30 PM.
Leave the desktop powered on after the instructional day
Ensure it remains connected to the district network
Allow updates to complete without shutting the computer down
If you need help running updates or encounter any issues, Request a Technology Specialist for assistance. We’re happy to help ensure your desktop is fully up to date and running smoothly.
If you prefer to update your laptop at school, you can do so after 3:30 PM, when Windows Updates are no longer blocked on the district network.
Leave your laptop powered on after the instructional day
Make sure it is connected to VacavilleUSD Wi-Fi
Plug the laptop into power
Run Windows Updates as usual
This option works well if you plan to stay on campus after school or have an opportunity to leave your device updating before heading home.
If your laptop needs updates:
Take your laptop home
Connect to your home Wi-Fi
Run Windows Updates outside of school hours
This is the fastest and most convenient option for most staff.
If updating at home isn’t possible:
Bring your laptop to the District Office
Drop it off with the Technology Department
A Technology Specialist will apply all required updates on your behalf
This option is especially helpful for devices that haven’t been updated in a long time or are experiencing update-related issues.
Run updates after school hours, once the district network opens
Leave the desktop powered on until updates fully complete
Don’t restart or shut down the computer unless prompted
If updates fail or appear stuck, Request a Technology Specialist for help
Regular updates help prevent login, printing, and performance issues
Plan updates for after 3:30 PM, weekends, or at home on your own Wi-Fi
Plug your laptop into power before starting updates
Updates may take 30–60 minutes (or longer if multiple updates are pending)
Avoid closing the lid or shutting down while updates are installing
If your laptop seems slow or behaves oddly, pending updates may be the cause
