Looking back, the biggest thing we learned was that good design comes from listening to people, not trusting our own assumptions. When we tested our app with students who had never seen it, things we thought were obvious often confused them, while small details we overlooked mattered the most. Design isn't a straight path. It's a cycle of building, testing, and reworking based on what you learn.
Testing early with simple methods like Wizard of Oz and think-aloud helped us catch real problems before committing to them, which saved us time and frustration. The feedback also pushed us to rethink parts of the design we hadn't questioned, like navigation and how the student and tutor experiences should differ.
How we began our project with basic wireframes:
How we ended, with a fully functional and clickable app, considering user needs, and with a modern style:
More than anything, this project showed us how complex design really is. Creating a successful product takes more than a good idea. It takes research, empathy, prototyping, testing, and constant iteration. Seeing the full process gave us a real appreciation for the care that goes into the products we use every day, and changed how we think about design as a whole.
