You are getting ready to enter the world of online learning, possibly for the first time. Online learning takes a bit of preparation. If you have learned online before -- even as a former UVA student -- there are several things to learn or to review about our unique implementation for online instruction. In addition, it is beneficial to understand how we operate as a school and what our expectations are of our students and our Learning Coaches. Your "UVA Onboarding Course" provides information about all of those topics.
Students and Learning Coaches will progress through a series of orientation videos, audios, and documentation to learn about University View Academy and to learn about their roles as members of our UVA family.
Students will log into the learning platform, Canvas, to activate the student's learning account
Learning Coaches will create the Canvas Observer (i.e., parent) account to establish an important communications channel with the school
Students and Learning Coaches will complete a Canvas training course.
Learning Coaches will complete an in-depth training segment specifically about their role.
Use the NEXT and PREVIOUS buttons (or the specially labeled links and buttons) at the bottom of each page to advance through the course in a sequential order. Each page prepares you for the next topic. So, skipping ahead will be confusing unless there are specific instructions on the page that tell you to click an alternate link.
You will occasionally see a narration clip at the top of a page and occasionally at the top of new sections on a page. These narration clips are provided as a listening option for the information on the page. They are not required.
A few pages contain audio clips of experienced parents and students who have recorded messages for you about their experiences at UVA. Those audio recordings are clearly identified and are required.
TIPS:
Scroll through a course page before starting so you will know how it's organized, especially if you choose to listen rather than read the content.
Click the NEXT button (or whatever navigation button is provided) to move to the next page in the course. The course will not auto-advance to the next page.
Make a note of the last page you were on (and where you were on the page) so you can resume the course easily after a break. (Consider bookmarking the page on your device.)
If you are viewing the course on a computer, the course's navigation links might be visible to you on the left side of the window. If you do not see the navigation links or you are on a mobile device, there is always a three-bar menu (also known as a hamburger menu) in the upper left hand corner of the course's page. Remember to always advance sequentially in the course, but remember that the navigation links can help you locate where you are in the course if you need to pause.
