Dr. Lindsay has dug through the Earth Archives section of the Yggdrasil's databases to find interesting science fiction novels that relate to space travel. While there were many wonderful books, movies, and television shows (see Dr. Lindsay's Suggested Sci-Fi below [coming soon]) to choose from, he settled on two texts for us to explore and enjoy.
Project Hail Mary by Andy Weir
To Be Taught, If Fortunate by Becky Chambers
In our SoPHL meetings, we will be doing a variety of activities and projects centered on these texts. See below for guidance on these projects
By Thursday, 27 February, read Chapters 1 through 6
Finding Questions We Can Check the Veracity Of
Identify science and space travel problems in the text
Look for explicit and implicit ones
What problems might lie between the lines of the text? Are there any problems that you can think of that could/should have been in the text
Write these problems down & do your best to identify what disciplines of scholarship would be the correct ones to answer the problems
Finding Interdisciplinary Connections
Identify science terms, phrases, methods, etc. that you don’t know a lot about but would like to research
Write these down & do your best to identify what disciplines of scholarship would be the correct ones to answer the problems
Exploring Problem-Solving & Critical Thinking
Find examples of when then main character is problem solving or applying critical thinking.
Write these down and comment on the main character’s problem-solving and critical thinking skills
