AUDITION INSTRUCTIONS – Fall 2025
All UT-Martin students interested in performing in the Wind Ensemble should plan to audition at the dates listed below. This audition is required for entrance into the Wind Ensemble and will be used for seating and part placement. Read the instructions outside of the Band Rehearsal Hall before auditioning.
All instrumental Music Majors and Minors are required to play this audition.
Audition Procedures – PLEASE READ CAREFULLY
There will not be a screen…no blind auditions. You will sit next to Dr. Oelrich.
Everyone will play the Lyrical Study
Excerpts
Excerpts are categorized by difficulty – 1 (easiest), 2 (medium), 3 (difficult)
From those listed, you will be asked to play a minimum of two excerpts of your choice, at least one of which should be from the 2 (medium) category
Higher chair placements and part assignments will result from preparing more difficult excerpts
You may choose to prepare more than the required two excerpts – showing more initiative and drive will potentially contribute to higher chair placements and part assignments
The goal is to get to know you as a person and musician to best know how to teach you in an ensemble setting.
If You Are Not a Music Major
We welcome students who are not music majors to audition!
Access to Excerpts
For purposes of copyright, these excerpts are password protected. If you have not received an email with login information, please contact Dr. John Oelrich (joelrich@utm.edu).
Repertoire and Suggestions
Whole parts are provided (for context) with the audition excerpts bracketed as normal. Not all of the semester’s repertoire is present and not every piece has an excerpt, but all are included for reference. It is suggested that you print the only the pages you need but consult the entire part when listening to and studying recordings.
Following the instructions and procedure above, prepare the bracketed sections to the tempos marked to the best of your abilities – slower and more accurate is always better than fast and sloppy. If a metronome marking isn’t listed, consult a recording for a common interpretation.
Be sure to count through all of the excerpt’s interior rests carefully and accurately.
Listen to reference recordings for style and common interpretations.

UTM Bands Programming – Fall 2025
The UT Martin Aviators Marching Band performs with an energetic style of marching and playing utilizing a wide variety of musical genres and styles. The Aviators Color Guard, sideline percussion, winds and field percussion provide the visual and musical excitement for the ensemble. The group regularly performs at home football games at Hardy Graham Stadium, local parades, and select exhibitions throughout the Fall Semester. Both campus musicians, students not majoring in music, as well as music majors are welcomed as members without audition. Scholarships are available to all registered performing members.
Audition information will be posted when it becomes available.
