UTM University Bands
Spring 2023
--> UTM Aviators Marching Band Registration Form Fall 2024 <--
The UT Martin Aviators Marching Band performs with an energetic style of marching and playing utilizing a wide variety of musical genres and styles. The Aviators Color Guard, sideline percussion, winds and field percussion provide the visual and musical excitement for the ensemble. The group regularly performs at home football games at Hardy Graham Stadium, local parades, and select exhibitions throughout the Fall Semester. Both campus musicians, students not majoring in music, as well as music majors are welcomed as members without audition. Scholarships are available to all registered performing members.
Audition INstructions - Spring 2024
All UT-Martin students interested in performing in the Wind Ensemble should plan to audition at the dates listed below. This audition is required for entrance into the Wind Ensemble. Read the instructions outside of the Band Rehearsal Hall before auditioning.
All instrumental Music Majors and Minors are required to play this audition.
Excerpts will be available on the University Bands website: utm.edu/bands. In order to be unbiased, auditions will be blind – you will play your excerpts behind a screen and not see the panel. All wind auditions will be held in Band Rehearsal Hall in the Fine Arts Building. Adhere to the marked tempos.
If You Are Not a Music Major
We welcome students who are not music majors to audition!

Repertoire and Suggestions
Whose parts are provided (for context) with the audition excerpts bracketed as normal. Not every piece has an excerpt, but all are included for reference. It is suggested that you print the only the pages you need but consult the entire part when listening to and studying recordings.
Excerpts for each instrument are from some of this semester’s repertoire (Gershwin Rhapsody in Blue; Montoya Get On Up; Chance Incantation and Dance; Su Koh Lament for Wind Orchestra; Giroux La Mesquita de Cordoba; and Maslanka Mother Earth Fanfare. Be sure to do the following:
Prepare the bracketed sections to the tempos marked to the best of your abilities – slower and more accurate is always better than fast and sloppy. If a metronome marking isn’t listed, consult a recording for a common interpretation.
Be sure to count through all of the excerpt’s interior rests carefully and accurately.
Listen to reference recordings for style and common interpretations.
Reference Recordings
Reference recordings for the works from which the audition excerpts are extracted are listed in the NAXOS Music Library Database, which is accessible through the Paul Meek Library website. Please consult these recordings for style and performance practice questions. You may also use other sources – composer’s websites, YouTube, etc.
