Martin Community Band

The Martin Community Band is in its 12th year and is open to musicians of all ages and levels. We routinely have middle schoolers through retirees, students, amateurs, and a few professionals.  The wide variety of music is accessible and it’s a lot of fun!

Rehearsals are on Tuesday evenings in Fine Arts 136 from 7:00-9:00 pm from May 21-June 25 and plays four concerts (May 30, June 13, June 20, June 27) each with a new theme and program.  There are two rehearsals before each concert. You do not need commit to all the performances, but I do ask that you attend the rehearsals for the concerts you plan to play.

Serving as the core of the Music in the Park Concerts, the MCB regularly draws audiences of several hundred.  The concerts are fun, family-friendly events featuring several food trucks and activities for kids.

Participation in the MCB is free.  To register, please visit the Martin Community Band Registration Form  and fill out the form (only so I can plan for folders, set-up, communication, etc.).

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me.

FAQ

What is the Martin Community Band?

A place for local musicians to gather, perform and also to provide the community with concert series that will bring the community together once per week, provide cultural enrichment and economically benefit our downtown businesses.

The Martin Community Band is in its 12th year and is open to musicians of all ages and levels. We routinely have middle schoolers through retirees, students, amateurs, and a few professionals.  The wide variety of music is accessible and it’s a lot of fun!

When and where are the rehearsals?

Rehearsals & Performances

Rehearsals are on Tuesday evenings in Fine Arts 136 from 7:00-9:00 pm from May 21-June 25 and plays four concerts (May 30, June 13, June 20, June 27) each with a new theme and program.  There are two rehearsals before each concert. You do not need commit to all the performances, but I do ask that you attend the rehearsals for the concerts you plan to play.

What kind of music will you play?

We will play almost all types of music. The basis will be music from the concert band repertoire, but the programs will feature marches, overtures, suites, Broadway medleys, and folk songs. There will be something for every musical palate.

Who can perform in the group?

Musicians of all ages! This ensemble's membership will draw from adult community musicians, local band directors, college students (both music majors and non-majors), and local high school and middle school musicians. In addition to being a great opportunity for adult community musicians to play, it is a fantastic opportunity for young musicians to perform in an ensemble with more mature players, thus accelerating their development as musicians.

What if I haven't played in 30 years? Can I still play?

All players are welcome! If someone hasn't played in thirty years, then this is a perfect opportunity to dust off the instrument and rediscover the joys of making music!

How will Martin benefit from having its own community band?

Having a community band in Martin will provide the musicians the opportunities to perform and build connections as well as bringing the community together in a relaxed, festive and family-friendly performances. In addition, it is our hope that our downtown businesses will benefit from the audiences in attendance at the performances.

Is there a limit on the number of musicians that can play?

There is no limit - the more the merrier! Please notify John Oelrich ( joelrich@utm.edu | (731) 881-7403) if you would like to play so we can insure there are enough folders, chairs and stands.

Do I have to play all of the concerts in order to participate?

No. While musicians are encouraged to play the whole season, they do not have to commit to playing all of the performances. It is strongly encouraged that you attend both rehearsals of the performances you commit to playing.
