USC Student Health

USC Student Health is committed to providing you the highest quality primary health care while you study at USC.

Our goal at USC Kaufman is to keep the students healthy and dancing throughout their collegiate and professional career. Annual Wellness Screenings are mandatory for all freshman dancers and highly encouraged for upper level students. Beginning in the Academic Year of 2020, all BFA dancers are required to complete their Annual Wellness Screen.

Kaufman Wellness Initiative

The Wellness Initiative seeks to maximize the health and well-being of dancers to enhance training and performance, reduce the risk of injury, and assist with the treatment and rehabilitation of new and existing injuries. Our comprehensive program is a collaborative effort between the University’s medical practitioners, the faculty, and dancers.

Wellness is woven into the curriculum, in courses such as Conditioning for Dancers and Dance Science. Other components include access to a high-specialized team of on-site physical therapists and orthopedic surgeons, and supplemental cross-training sessions in Gyrotonics and Pilates. In addition, USC Kaufman provides mental health resources available specifically for BFA dancers. Wellness workshops and additional resources provided by Kyle Beasley from the Student Services team round out the Wellness Initiative offerings.

Wellness Appointments

Currently offered through the Dance Medicine Program are 20 minute one-on-one Wellness Appointments and 30 minute one-on-one Physical Therapy Injury Appointments. These appointments are provided by USC Kaufman. Wellness appointments are scheduled for dancers that are not having to modify their dancing in class nor rehearsal, but rather looking to improve technique, strength, or flexibility.

Physical Therapy Injury Appointments

Physical Therapy Injury Appointments are scheduled for dancers that are having pain beyond muscle soreness and require modifications in class, rehearsal, performances, or daily life. If you are not sure which appointment to schedule, please schedule a Physical Therapy Injury Appointment. Together with the Dance Medicine Team, we will keep you dancing through the semester.

Please visit https://calendly.com/ksodpt to schedule your appointment with Marisa Hentis and Andrew Tai. All appointments are held in the Fitness Zone.

HIPPA: Please note that HIPAA forms must be completed by students every year in order to continue treatment with the Physical Therapy Team during on-site weekly appointments. Contact Dr. Marisa Hentis at hentis@usc.edu for this form.

Engemann Medical Services

USC Student Health offers primary care and specialty care and services, as well as various resources.

Specialty care includes an Acupuncture Clinic, Allergy Clinic, Musculoskeletal Chiropractic Clinic, Dental Clinic, Dermatology Clinic, Immunization & Compliance Clinic, Nutrition Services, Occupational Health services, Occupational Therapy services, Travel Clinic, Physical Therapy Clinic and more. Students often need a referral from a primary care physician to see a specialist.

Schedule an appointment online or by calling (213) 740-WELL (9355). If you feel sick after regular business hours, call (213) 740-WELL (9355) to be connected to an on-call physician or nurse.

USC Counseling Services

USC Counseling Services offers a number of resources to help students meet their academic and personal goals, including:

  • Immediate support for students in crisis. Schedule a phone consultation online. A USC Kaufman staff or faculty member can also go with you to the counseling center, if you need to be seen immediately.

  • Individual counseling on short-term basis.

  • Group counseling and workshops.

  • Psychiatric Services.

Student Health Fee & Health insurance

Students taking at least six units will be charged a Student Health Fee, which covers most primary care visits at the Engemann and Eric Cohen Student Health Centers, as well as an initial consultation visit with counseling services, access to RSVP services, X-rays, and wellness services provided by the Office for Wellness and Health Promotion. Some services may have nominal co-payments and fees (i.e. $15 for PT appointments).

The Student Health Fee does not cover services provided outside the Student Health Center. Therefore, you are also required to have health insurance either through the USC Aetna Student Health Plan or your family plan. Billing for consultations and treatment can sometimes be complicated if you do not have the USC Aetna Student Health Plan. However, USC Kaufman's dedicated wellness team will work with you throughout the process.

Relationship & Sexual Violence Prevention & Services (RSVP)

  • Relationship and Sexual Violence Prevention and Services (RSVP) provides immediate therapy services for situations related to gender and power-based harm (e.g., sexual assault, domestic violence, stalking). In case of an emergency or if you need immediate assistance, call (213) 740-4900 (after hours, press “0” to speak to an on-call counselor). RSVP on-call counselors aid in discussing medical options, reporting options, and provide crisis support and advocacy.

  • For immediate medical support after an assault, you can visit Santa Monica Rape Treatment Center, 24/7. The address is 1250 Sixteenth Street, Santa Monica, CA 90404. Call the center directly at (424) 259-7208.

  • Please note that a Relationship and Sexual Violence Prevention and Services counselor can accompany you, and it is recommended you speak with one of our confidential counselors to guide you through this process. Call (213) 740-4900.

Illness & Injury Policies

  • Sick: If you are contagious, have a fever, or another serious illness, you should stay home. Please be sure to email the instructors of all the courses you will be missing. If you are well enough to attend class, you are expected to do so. Review your course syllabi for more information about illnesses and absences.

  • Sitting Out: Students who choose to "sit out" in class must complete a Class Observation Form.

  • Short-Term Injury Recovery: Students with an injury requiring one to three days of recovery are expected to attend classes and participate in an "injury modified capacity" as determined by the faculty member in conjunction with the Dance Medicine Team.

  • Long-Term Injury Recovery: Students than three days of recovery will work with Dr. Marisa Hentis, faculty, and other team members to design a custom Student Injury Recovery Plan (see documents below). This "contract" helps everyone be on the same page.

  • Missing Class/Exams: For mental health, physical illness, or sustained injuries, contact Student Support and Advocacy (SSA). They can help you navigate getting excused from your classes, making up exams, and arranging for accommodations when needed. The SSA staff is there as a liaison between you and department representatives, faculty, or staff to ensure that you are receiving the appropriate assistance. The SSA staff is also able to help you through the process of taking a medical leave of absence (LOA).

  • Getting Around Campus: Disabled Access to Road Transportation (DART) is a free service that is available to assist USC students, faculty, and staff with temporary mobility issues in getting around campus. Complete an application and submit a doctor's note. This will allow you to schedule your rides in advance between the hours of 9:00am-5:00pm, Monday-Friday.

Health Promotion Strategy

The Office for Health Promotion Strategy supports the University of Southern California with health promotion that advances public health, student learning, and the unique USC experience. Please visit the link for current activities and services available.

Additional Resources

Trojans Care for Trojans (TC4T) is an initiative within the Office of Campus Wellness and Crisis Intervention that empowers USC students, faculty and staff to take action when they are concerned about a fellow Trojan challenged with personal difficulties. On the site, find a private and anonymous request form providing an opportunity for Trojans to help a fellow Trojan Family member.

Student Leave of Absence: Undergraduate students who find it necessary to take time away from their studies may request to take a Leave of Absence with the support of the academic advisor of their major. The Leave of Absence process eases the transition for students, both at the time they take a leave of absence and upon their eventual return to the university. Students who will not return to USC should follow the university's Guidelines for Withdrawal.
