The University of Rizal System (URS) has substantially contributed to achieving SDG 9 as it fosters a culture of innovation and creativity among its students and faculty. With the conducted programs, projects, and activities related to innovation, it educates and aims to ensure that it has disseminated and promoted awareness amongst individuals that the new ideas are protected and aided in facilitating the commercialization of research outputs. Incorporating research and development on intellectual property protection, technology transfer, entrepreneurship, industry-academic partnerships, and sustainable infrastructure development, it serves as a bridge between academic innovation and applications.
The university recognizes that industry-academic collaboration is critical to achieving SDG 9, thereby securing partnerships and grants as it develops, creates sustainable infrastructure, and ensures innovation reaches its full potential. It has diligently sought partnerships with various industries to provide a platform for knowledge exchange, collaborative research, and training programs.
It introduces a platform to showcase innovative ideas and incubators designed to nurture startups and help them grow from concept to commercialization through technology pitching. These activities provided the students, faculty, and other interested stakeholders access to resources such as mentorship and networking opportunities, which can be an avenue in its quest to commercialize newly developed technologies successfully.
Establishing the Intellectual Property, Innovation, and Technology Support Hub (IPITSH), which serves as the technology transfer office, is vital in helping faculty and students navigate the commercialization pathway as it provides the step-by-step stages of development and licensing. URS actively encourages its researchers and students to file for patents, copyrights, and trademarks for their inventions, thus safeguarding their intellectual property rights. By emphasizing the importance of IP protection, the university ensures that the novel ideas generated are recognized and protected from exploitation, providing inventors with the security needed to proceed with commercialization. The office also assists in packaging the technology for registration and distribution and supports startup ventures that can bring the items to market for profit analysis.
As URS continuously drives to strengthen SDG 9 in its instruction, research, extension, and operations, the initiatives benefit its immediate stakeholders. Also, they contribute to the broader regional and national goals of sustainable industrialization, resilient infrastructure, and inclusive economic growth.
