The University of Rizal System (URS) is deeply committed to supporting Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 13: Climate Action. Through its Environmental Education and Biodiversity Research Center (EEBRC) and the activities, programs, and projects of its offices and students, the university plays a crucial role in promoting climate resilience, environmental stewardship, and sustainable practices for the benefit of both the planet and future generations.
The EEBRC serves as a hub for climate action education through activities that raise awareness about the impacts of climate change and the importance of mitigation and adaptation strategies. Through workshops, lectures, and hands-on learning, the center engages students, faculty, and the local community in understanding climate science and sustainable solutions. It is also dedicated to preserving and enhancing biodiversity in the region. This includes projects focused on protecting local ecosystems, promoting native species, and reducing human impact on fragile habitats. The center also promotes sustainable land and water management practices that support long-term ecological balance. The university engages in research and community programs through its approved research agenda about agriculture, responsible forestry, and sustainable fishing practices that help communities adapt to the challenges posed by climate change.
The university participates in the annual Climate Change Expenditure Tagging (CCET) by submitting an action plan through the Quality Assurance Report (QAR) form to the Climate Change Commission. This process helps to focus the university’s activities toward meeting its national climate policies and enhancing its dedication to climate change goals. The action plan co-submitted is a formatted work plan for the university’s annual climate change awareness year programs, projects, and activities. As a result, the university can provide focused, coordinated climate education to its students, its broader faculty, and the surrounding communities to actively encourage and participate in sustainable actions to combat climate change. By being a member of CCET, it creates an added responsibility of taking the lead in exercising environmental responsibilities and sustainability.
URS implements green practices within its campuses, including waste minimization, energy efficiency measures, water conservation, and sustainable materials in construction. These initiatives model climate-conscious behaviors for students and the broader community. It also works to reduce its carbon footprint by promoting energy-efficient technologies and encouraging sustainable commuting options such as biking, carpooling, and public transportation. Additionally, the university encourages using digital platforms to reduce paper consumption.
Through its Environmental Education and Biodiversity Research Center and a wide range of student-led projects, academic programs, and community-based initiatives, the University of Rizal System (URS) is playing a vital role in advancing climate action. By fostering environmental education, research, and hands-on climate resilience projects, URS addresses the pressing climate change issues and prepares tomorrow’s noblest to build a more sustainable and climate-resilient world. The university’s commitment to environmental stewardship, anchored in its mission and strategic plan, is for sustainable development to ensure that planet Earth and future generations benefit from today's collective efforts.
