The University of Rizal System (URS), a state university in the Province of Rizal with ten campuses, 25,000 thousand students, and 1,000 employees, has long been at the forefront of providing quality education and fostering an environment that promotes sustainable development. As part of its dedication to contributing to global sustainability, it has aligned itself with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Among these goals is SDG 16, which emphasizes the importance of Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions. The university’s vision, mission, goals, and strategic plan for 2021-2030 discuss the importance of advocating initiatives, programs, and projects in promoting peaceful societies, ensuring access to justice for all, and fostering transparent, accountable, and inclusive institutions.
President Nancy Pascual’s transformative, transparent, and accountable leadership vision has ensured that equal participation and representation will be implemented in the university administration. The involvement of the Student Federation (SF), Faculty Organization of the University of Rizal System (FOURS), Organization of University of Rizal System Staff (OURSS) Inc. and URS Morong Employees Assoc. (URSMEA) are vital in the university’s decision-making process. As key stakeholders, these groups ensure that diverse perspectives are represented, promoting a collaborative and inclusive approach to university governance.
The Student Federation, with its elected President, is given a seat on the URS Board of Regents and the President of the Faculty Organization of the University of Rizal System (FOURS). Meanwhile, the elected Presidents and representatives of non-teaching staff organizations, namely OURSS Inc. and URSMEA, are given seats in various committees where their expertise contributes to making sound decisions for the benefit of the university.
The student federation, faculty federation, and non-teaching organizations are privileged to conduct activities that benefit their respective groups. These activities that are responsive to the Sustainable Development Goals - promote welfare, knowledge generation, health, and well-being and receive funding support from the university.
The importance of justice is a fundamental aspect of SDG 16. URS plays an essential role in advancing this goal through curricular offerings that support justice by providing programs related to law and civil enforcement. Of the 5,147 graduates in SY 2023-2024, 30 earned a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science, five completed a Master’s in Public Administration, and eight graduated with a Doctorate in Public Administration. These programs serve as a foundation for students pursuing careers focused on governance, public service, and civil defense.
The university, bound by its commitment to public service, has supported the Municipality of Baras by hosting the Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) Mandatory Training on November 11, 2023, at the URS Morong Function Hall. It was held in response to the request of the municipal mayor, Hon. Wilfredo C. Robles, and funded by the Municipality of Baras. The activity is part of higher education's social responsibility as it aids future leaders in getting an education and navigating legal systems.
In its continued quest to sustain SDG 16, the university leaders engage in various programs focusing on good governance, leadership, and civic engagement, which are essential for maintaining a good standing as a solid public institution. These initiatives equip and benefit the critical stakeholders of the university with the skills necessary to assume leadership roles within government institutions, civil society organizations, and the private sector in the future.
Likewise, by empowering students and the local community with the knowledge, skills, and values needed to contribute to a more just and peaceful society, the university is making a significant impact on the country's long-term development in its contribution to AMBISYON 2040. These efforts support SDG 16 on peace, justice, and strong institutions, as well as reinforce URS's broader mission and achievement of its vision to produce upright and competent graduates that will foster sustainable development and social transformation.
