The University of Rizal System (URS), with 10 campuses in the Province of Rizal, has consistently demonstrated a strong commitment to promoting sustainable development and addressing global challenges through its educational programs, research initiatives, and community engagement efforts. Among the 17 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), SDG 7—Affordable and Clean Energy—is particularly crucial in the Philippines, where energy access, sustainability, and affordability remain significant concerns. In alignment with the global agenda for sustainability, it has undertaken several initiatives that focus on creating solutions for clean, affordable, and sustainable energy sources.
URS consistently advocates for cost-effective and clean energy and environment that is deeply rooted in its committed environmental plan spearheaded by the Environmental Education and Biodiversity Research Center (EEBRC). They are initiatives that support the university community and the noble cause of enhancing environmental sustainability and resilience.
Energy Conservation: Since URS has implemented Office Memorandum No. 110, the organization has encouraged energy conservation practices among faculty and staff members. This endeavor, implemented on January 3, 2023, addresses the conservation and management of energy use throughout the university.
Environmental Laws: Some national laws URS follows are the Clean Air Act and Clean Water Act. These laws aim to halt pollution and spue and provide general ecological protection on all university campuses.
Environmental Management Plan: The EMP aims to ensure that URS engages in sustainable practice in projects, minimizes risks, and protects species and habitats. Its implementation will ensure that the school environment fosters sustainability and encourages students' and staff’s learning motivation.
URS joined the pledge of commitment as an academe partner of the DENR and Local Chief Executives in the launching of Project TRANSFORM in the Province of Rizal
Project TRANSFORM: New for Project TRANSFORM, URS is working with DENR and local government to promote such sustainable projects as regenerative tourism, GHG inventory, and protection of endemic trees in Rizal province. It also reveals how URS is determined to practice environmental conservationism by raising the community’s awareness.
Greenhouse Gas Webinars: At URS, Greenhouse Gas Webinars focus on the effects and related issues of greenhouse gases, energy consumption, or sustainability. These webinars form a part of URS’s Climate Change and Environmental Sustainability outreach program.
As it embarks on its strategic planning, the University of Rizal System is committed to running campaigns to raise awareness about energy conservation, both on campus and in local communities. Through workshops, seminars, and student-led initiatives, it encourages individuals to adopt more sustainable lifestyles by using energy more efficiently, reducing waste, and utilizing renewable energy sources when possible. By promoting clean energy technologies, energy efficiency, and community engagement, the university contributes to achieving SDG 7 and helping build a more sustainable and equitable society for future generations.
