The Massachusetts Tests of Educator Licensure (MTELs) are the tests required for acquiring any Massachusetts license. The MTELs are rigorous exams of pedagogical and content knowledge, administered by Pearson Education at testing centers around the state. Many of the exams are computer-based, though some are administered only as pencil-and-paper exams. Go to the official MTEL website for information about test dates, registration, and costs. MTELs should be scheduled outside of the work day unless otherwise approved by a manager.
Please see this webpage to determine which MTELs you must pass. Scroll over the "MTEL Information" link above to see a list of tests; click each page for additional resources.
This Score Reporting Timeline includes all testing and upcoming score reporting dates. It is important to note that the MTEL requires you wait 45 days before retaking a test if you do not pass the first time.
Please note that in order to make the March 1 deadline, you will need to make sure that your score is reported before this date. Not all MTELs are offered all of the time; please research when your required tests are offered early so that you can meet the deadline.
See our subpages with resources and tips gathered from your certified UP colleagues about preparing for and passing your required MTELs.
