Principals, Assistant Principals, and Deans of Curriculum and Instruction: You are required to be certified in Principal/Assistant Principal, PreK-8 or 5-12. Here are the general requirements for this license:
Passing the Communications and Literacy MTEL
Completion of an Administrative Apprenticeship/Internship in the principal/assistant principal role at the level of license sought with a trained mentor
The above requirements will satisfy a Provisional License, which is valid for 5 years.
For the initial license, you will need:
Completion of an approved post-baccalaureate program of studies including a supervised practicum in the role of this license.
A passing score of at least 2.75 on all Performance Assessment for Leaders (PALs) tasks. This is a long, detailed process involving multiple due dates for portfolio-like tasks; please take time to read the website and supporting resources including this candidate handbook. You must register for each task individually but can do so at the same time; there are four tasks total.
SEI endorsement (Teacher or Administrator)
Please work with your school leadership and Talent team to determine who is properly certified to act as your trained mentor. We will be providing additional information around this process for the current school year.
Deans of Students/Dean of Student Supports: It is not currently necessary for you to be licensed. If this changes we will let you know, and you would follow the same process as above.
Deans of Special Education: You are required to be certified in Special Education Administrator. Your requirements are almost the same as above with an internship and mentorship program focused on building knowledge and skills not only in leadership but also specific to special education.
As of 5/2020 there is no PALS process for the SPED Admin licensure; until it is created this is not a required part of achieving licensure.
Please work with your school leadership and Talent team to identify who is properly certified to act as your trained mentor.
