Bachelor of Science in Nursing

Overview

The Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) is a four-year that is competency-based, community-oriented, and value-based.  The program aims to prepare beginning professional nurses, who shall:

1.   Apply critical thinking in the practice of nursing using the knowledge from the physical, social, natural and health sciences, and the humanities.

2.   Provide safe, quality, holistic, and compassionate nursing care to individuals, families, population groups, and community utilizing the nursing process.

3.   Use the most efficient technology and best evidence in managing clients.

4.   Provide nursing care using skills on health promotion and disease prevention, toward a higher level of wellness of clients and the society in the context of but not limited to primary health care approach.

5.   Conduct self professionally at all times.

6.   Demonstrate integrity, respect for human dignity, gender and culture sensitivity, and social justice in the practice of nursing.

7.   Document nursing practice decisions, outcomes of client care and program/service implementation using appropriate forms and technology.

8.   Utilize effective inter-professional collaboration, teamwork, and community partnerships toward improved health outcomes, client empowerment, and community competence.

9.   Practice leadership and management skills in the delivery of safe, quality client care, and continuous quality improvement of nursing care and health service.

10. Conduct relevant research that is compliant to technical and ethical guidelines with supervision.

11. Engage in lifelong learning with a passion to keep current with national and global developments in general, and nursing and health developments in particular.

12. Demonstrate responsible citizenship, love of country, and pride of being a Filipino.

13. Communicate effectively with clients, health team, and other stakeholders in achieving health, clinical units and program goals.

 

In addition to passing all 161 units of required course work and the 8 units of PE and NSTP, completion of the following requirements are necessary for graduation:

1.       Assisting in 10 major operations/surgeries

2.       Observing, assisting and handling 5 deliveries each respectively; and,

3.       Completing 5 cord dressings along with the initial care of newborns.

Admission to the BS Nursing Program

There are two ways for admission to the BS Nursing program- (1) through the UP College Admissions Test or (2) through shifting or transferring to the program. 


Through the UP College Admissions Test

You are qualified to apply as a 1st year student to the University through the UPCAT if:

UPDATE: Due to the pandemic, the University decided to forego with the UP College Admissions Tests for 2021 admission. Rather, the University will entertain online applications for admission. For more details, please visit: https://upcat.up.edu.ph/ 

As a shiftee or transferee

Students from other constituent units of the University of the Philippines (e.g., other Colleges of UP Manila, UP Diliman, UP Baguio) may apply to shift to the BS Nursing program provided that they meet the following requirements: 

NOTE: The College of Nursing currently does not accept students who have earned a previous degree program, or those current students coming from another university outside of the UP System. 

The College accepts shiftees and transferees during the 1st semester of every academic year. Students who have met the minimum requirements above will be invited for an interview by the UPCN BSN Admissions Committee. The number of slots vary per year. Only successful applicants are informed thru email by the Office of the University Registrar.
