The College of Education Library was established on December 7, 1949, by Dean Francisco Benitez to provide library materials and services to college students and faculty. At the time, the UP had neither university library collections nor library services. The UP’s pre-war university library was completely destroyed in the battle for the liberation of Manila in 1945, and the University Library building in the new campus in Diliman, Quezon City was still under construction. Dean Benitez instructed Ms. Amor Cabreza-Guerrero, then librarian of the University High School, to buy books from local bookstores and from American publishers on the philosophy, sociology and psychology of education, and other areas relevant to the college’s offerings.
Today, the EDUC Library is one of about 45 college, school, and departmental libraries of UP Diliman. It houses some 63,542 volumes of books, research papers, theses and dissertations, serial titles, standardized tests, audio-visual materials, learning kits and curriculum materials (children’s books and textbooks).
Looking toward the future, the College of Education envisions a significant enhancement of its library facilities. Plans are underway to establish a new and modern library that aligns with the technological advancements and changing trends in information access and management.
