Home Economics is a discipline that deals with the satisfaction of both the physical and relational needs of individuals and families (Florencio & Cabusora, 1993 as cited in Florencio, 1995a). The history of home economics as an academic discipline at the University of the Philippines can be traced back to November 12, 1921, when the University Council then approved the first HE-related degree programs. Over the years, because of the evolving nature of the discipline, new undergraduate and graduate academic programs were instituted. At present, these programs are managed by the five departments of the College of Home Economics. The College is equipped with various facilities, such as the Tearoom, Pilot Food Plant, Child Development Center, and CHE Museum to maximize the learning of its students and promote the development of its faculty and staff members. All stakeholders are also engaged in various research and extension works that aim to study families and their conditions, as well as develop and evaluate programs that can assist in improving their quality of life.

At present times, while the whole nation and world continue to battle the COVID-19 pandemic, Home Economics proved its worth in alleviating the major problems of families and households, especially in the management of their resources at home. In its centennial year at the University of the Philippines in 2021, Home Economics does not stop at meeting the needs of individuals, families, and the larger communities. According to Dr. Florencio (1995b), “Where there are homes and families, there will be home economics. And where there is a University of the Philippines in the service of the nation, there is a place for the discipline of home economics and an institution for its study and development.”
