The Covid-19 pandemic changed the landscape of learning for all of us. We have had to evolve meaningful ways of learning together in a context that at first glance seems ill suited to the educational endeavor. Now more than ever, we are being called upon to consider the important role that our students’ mental health plays in their ability, confidence, and willingness to learn. This webinar walks us through a simple approach to student learning and mental health that leverages a student advising process in which teachers and students have informative, useful, and affirming conversations about the student’s performance and mental health concerns. Part 1 presents guidelines for academic program units on establishing a simple Student Advising System and gives us an idea of how student advising via remote could be set up and executed. Meanwhile, Part 2 presents guidelines for individual faculty on how to navigate challenges that arise when we try to reach out and engage with our students in a different way from what we’re used to.
