Zooming Out: A midterm Assessment of Best Practices in Teaching Online

One-and-a-half months into the semester, we find ourselves asking: how have we adjusted to the new demands of online and remote learning? What challenges have we encountered as we navigate our way through online teaching? What modifications have we made to our own course designs in order to fine-tune our pedagogy to optimize student learning? These are just some of the questions that are on our minds as we acclimatize to the digital turn in our teaching.

In order to address these concerns, the Department of English and Comparative Literature, College of Arts and Letters, UP Diliman has organized this seminar-workshop to discuss some common issues, share best practices, and reassess our own teaching. In doing so, we hope to have a better sense of where we are, where we are going, and what we can do better for next semester.

In this 2-hour session, fellow faculty members will be sharing their insights and experience about aspects of online and remote learning that are effective in their classes. The session will cover four topics:

1) “Zoom ba? Reimagining the Classroom in Digital Space” by Judy Ick and May Jurilla

2) “Socrates 2.0: Online Platforms for Socratic Discussions” by Marby Villaceran and Gabriela Lee

3) “Remote, Control: Balancing Student Management and Faculty Sanity amidst a Pandemic” by Aileen Salonga and Vyxz Vazquez

4) “Administrative Adjustments for Online Education Planning” by Lily Rose Tope

The session will be a venue for us to exchange ideas about what works best in remote learning and also anticipate challenges and other concerns in the next semester. It will be on November 5, 2020 (Thursday), 2-4pm.

  3. Given the limited resources at our disposal, what concrete strategies can we offer to our students as forms of psychosocial support?

Resisting the Rubric: The Arts and Humanities in Remote Learning

This conversation is for the arts and humanities cluster by faculty members from the arts and humanities. The goal is to provide a venue where A&H faculty can discuss recurring issues and possibly come up with recommendations on how best to carry out online or remote learning in the future. Our invited guests talks about:

  1. Keeping the arts & humanities ethos alive in online and remote learning environments;

  2. Challenges and opportunities for teaching skills that require a physical space, equipment, and face-to-face assessment;

  3. Remote teaching practices from a multimedia creation/design perspective.

Naitawid! What We Learned about Remote Learning During the Midyear

Four faculty members from each of the academic clusters shares their remote learning experiences during the midyear. What strategies worked? What types of feedback or evidence of learning reassured them that their course objectives were achieved? This conversation aims to share some practical tips and provide a preview of how things might be like in the first semester.

True or False or None of the Above: Selecting appropriate assessments for remote learning

In 2 hours, Teacher Grace Reoperez briefly discusses the differences between formative and summative assessments and their importance in the learning process. The webinar also aims to help faculty select appropriate assessments for a remote learning context. Since it would be difficult to administer traditional tests or assessments that we usually give to students in a face-to-face setup, we have to design, plan, and construct ones that can be done remotely but are still anchored on the principles of good assessments.
