Welcome! This page offers a glimpse into my academic journey, research interests, and teaching philosophy.
My passion for the Middle East was ignited during my undergraduate studies at Utrecht University in the Netherlands (2002-2005). This led me to pursue a Master's degree in Middle Eastern Studies at the same institution (2008-2009). My quest for deeper understanding then took me to Leiden University, where I completed my PhD in International Relations in 2012. The focus of my doctoral dissertation was the establishment and subsequent fall of a short-lived Kurdish government in Iran in 1946.
In 2012, I returned to Iraqi Kurdistan, eager to contribute to the academic landscape of my homeland. The University of Duhok welcomed me as Head of the Department of Political Science and Sociology. This role, along with my teaching of Middle East Politics courses, allowed me to share my knowledge and engage in stimulating discussions with both students and fellow scholars. These experiences, along with a commitment to continuous learning, have led to my current position as Assistant Professor.
My academic journey has not been confined to classrooms. Extensive travel and interaction with people across Europe and the Middle East have enriched my understanding of diverse realities. Having lived, studied, and worked in the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Iraq, and Iran, I am fluent in English, Dutch, Persian, Turkish, and Kurdish. This multilingual and multicultural competence allows me to approach my research and teaching with a nuanced and global perspective.
My research interests lie primarily in the areas of Middle Eastern politics, nationalism, the Kurdish question, and international relations. Publications exploring these themes can be found on my dedicated webpage (my Research Folio). In the classroom, I strive to create a dynamic learning environment where students are not just passive recipients of information, but active participants in the quest for knowledge. More details on my teaching philosophy can be found on my Teaching Philosophy page (my Teaching Philosophy).
I am a firm believer in the power of collaboration. I actively seek opportunities to connect with fellow researchers and international scholars who share my interest in the ever-changing Middle East. If your research aligns with mine, I warmly invite you to explore potential collaborative opportunities.
I am excited to continue my academic journey at the University of Duhok, fostering a vibrant intellectual space for myself and my students. Here, we can delve into the complexities of the Middle East, contribute to a deeper global understanding, and work towards a future of greater knowledge and collaboration.
